“Not to interrupt someone who is talking, is giving space. To stand aside and not in the doorway is creating space. To refrain from judging too fast is leaving space. We need space more than ever now. To back off. To slow down. To be quiet. Anything that happens in open space, happens in a more positive way. More vulnerable...

"Electronic music with a human touch – that’s what Rafael Toral proposed himself to do when he started with the Space Program. Or electro-acoustic music, to be more exact, because his adapted amplifiers and other feedback and sinusoidal devices are combined with conventional instruments, played by fellow Portuguese...

Spacebow is expatriot Massachusetts composer and sculptor Robert Rutman performing on his steel cello and bow chime (both of which are essentially huge steel structures played with bows) along with Carsten Tiedemann (of Mo Boma).
Long, fascinating, spacey drone pieces, comparable to Harry Bertoia or Long String Instrument. Great stuff and at this price anyone even remotely interested in drones/trance/American maverick composers should own this!

"sPacemoNkey is the duo project of pianist Morten Qvenild and drummer Gard Nilssen. They enjoyed collaborating in Mathias Eick's band, and quickly decided to try playing together as a duo. During the past 10-15 years, Morten Qvenild has been one of the...

Founded in 1991, The Spacious Mind were one of the earliest of the second generation of psychedelic spacerock bands to come out of Scandinavia, releasing a string of very good albums in the 90s and mid 00s.
I’m not sure if they are still active, and this new album, a collection of rare compilations, live tracks, and vinyl-only releases, doesn’t really answer that question. It does, however, remind me how good they are!
This is a limited edition of only 300 copies made!

“With their sixth album Milano , the Milan formation Sparkle in Gray has now landed in my CD player, proving to be a worthwhile discovery.
It's not at all easy to describe or even to categorize what the quartet, which has been expanded to include a few guest musicians, produces here. There are a lot of electronic sounds to be heard here, plus saxophone, violin, piano, bass and drums, occasionally also voice samples or even vocals, whereby the instrumental parts clearly predominate. It all comes...

"What better way to promote Sparks' spinning blender of demented pop than Propaganda? The band's fourth album (and second with producer Muff Winwood) is chock-full of great ideas, including the overseas hits "Something for the Girl With Everything" and "Never Turn Your Back on Mother Earth." With Russell Mael delivering the lyrics in his rapid-fire falsetto, the lyric sheet is a necessary compass, as the clever wordplay is a key to discovering what these pranksters are up to. Ron Mael's skewed take on...

A great price on a great album of solo acoustic guitar music. I had never heard of Sparks until his first on Tzadik, but he's actually had a fairly lengthy career, studying classical guitar, Portugese and Eastern European music, playing in R 'n' B ban...

"Andreas Spechtl's debut album Thinking About Tomorrow, And How To Build It is a multifaceted work. It is personal -- Spechtl invites his listeners to look deep into the soul of his "I". It is rooted in history -- Spechtl constructs an emotional bridge to the cosmic music of Can and the aural sculptures of Conrad Schnitzler. It's also a modern and hybrid work -- Spechtl mines deep strata of sound and samples in his sonic quarry, layering them over a constant bass drum, capable of launching every DJ set...

This is the fourth album from a very hot, very heavy Hungarian fusion quartet after a long delay. The long delay, however, seems to have been a good thing, as the band has signed to a UK label, hopefully giving these guys a chance to reach a wider...

Excellent new album by an improvising French group I was not previously familiar with.
The want to bring together Sun Ra, Magma, Funkadelic and Robert Wyatt. Do they? I don’t know, but they’re good!!

“You certainly can't call Chris Spedding's 2005 release, Click Clack, a true blues album. While the respected session guitarist's roots certainly lay in blues-rock, the production is too pristine and the performances too perfect to be classified as blues. But if your forte is mature, mainstream rock with a slight bluesy edge (à la Eric Clapton's latter-day work), then Click Clack will be right up your alley. Even at his most upbeat, Spedding manages to keep everything extremely laid-back -- the tempos...

A very good album from 'way back when' with a fairly incredible story! I had never seen or heard it before now, although I knew its legend...!
Chris Spedding Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar

"Between 1969 and 1972, Chris Spedding was a rock guitarist whose unique sound, style and musical literacy meant regular employment on the exploding British progressive jazz.

Chris Speed: Tenor Saxophone, Clarinet
Chris Tordini: Acoustic Bass

“Chris Speed’s superb trio with bassist Chris Tordini and drummer Dave King continues to write its band history with Despite Obstacles, their third album on Intakt Records. Releasing ten years after their debut album, Despite Obstacles is a testament to the band’s continued vitality. Speed, a recent member of the newly arranged The Bad Plus where he is reunited with Dave King in another working band...

Chris Speed: clarinet

“Chris Speed, a driving force of modern jazz for decades, presents Light Line, an impressive solo statement on the clarinet. The repertoire of this musical legacy includes his own pieces and short improvisations, as well as compositions by inspiring luminaries such as John Coltrane, Julius Hemphill, Eric Dolphy and Paul Motion. In addition, there are compositions by friends and long-time musical companions such as Andrew D'Angelo, Skúli Sverrisson and Hilmar Jensson....

Chris Tordini: Acoustic Bass

" This new album by Chris Speed's excellent trio with drummer Dave King and bassist Chris Tordini is in many ways Speed's most fully developed and personal work to date. “Since arriving in New York in the early 1990s, Chris Speed has become one of the most vital improvising musicians on the scene through work that has always varied widely, moving from a jazz base out through various forms of folk, classical and rock music.
Over the last six years the reedist has been sorting through the varied strands of his circuitous, decades-long career, using his versatile trio with...

"Much has been said about the art of the improvising trio since the triangular interaction between Ornette Coleman, David Izenzon, and Charles Moffett. Now Martin Speicher, Georg Wolf, and Lou Grassi contribute another chapter to that long tradition. “Sha

It all started at the legendary Northern Virginia roadhouse JV's. D.C. born guitarists Anthony Pirog and Joel Harrison , musical soul mates, and now doing their first gig together, tore into a set of jazz-amped honkytonk songs before a stunned crowd. But..

"The psychedelic synthesized world of Kuckuck label stalwart Sam Spence. Born in San Francisco in 1927, Samuel Lloyd Spence is a peculiar piece in the komplicated krautrock puzzle. As an American expat working in a community of German rock musicians in the early '70s, Spence shared his alien status with the likes of David Johnson and Malcolm Mooney (Can), Carole Muriel (Brainticket), Maria Archer (Embryo), Bill Barone (Wallenstein), and the band Sweet Smoke, but in Spence's case it wasn't the free love...

Sannety: electronics
Trevor Dunn: bass

“The album “merdeka atau mati” was constructed through a number of rigorous writing sessions, rehearsals and home recordings mostly in 2017/2018. Meticulous care was given to create something new that included improvisation but not ruled by it.
Sannety designed a unique software instrument (programmed in Max/MSP by Dutch programmer Timo Hoogland) — a percussion instrument in its own right — that explores micro-rhythms not unlike Carnatic or...

Spettri's first release, Spettri, consisted of previously unreleased recordings from 1972. Now the band is back with a contemporary album.

"1001 years after the first original SPETTRI Album recorded in 1972, nothing has changed!

In the year 2973 Black Widow is proud to present again the original band from Florence well alive and kicking!

It's hard to believe that after all this time, that really good archival material is still lying in the vaults, but there are. This is a previously unheard and unknown quintet who recorded their only (and all previously unreleased) recordings in 1972...

“Laurie Spiegel’s second full-length album, Unseen Worlds, arrived just over ten years after her debut album. Having realized the pieces found on The Expanding Universe (1980) on an instrument no longer available to her, the GROOVE System at Bell Laboratories, Spiegel moved on to composing and developing for the Alles Machine, alphaSyntauri, McLeyvier and various other instruments before creating an instrument entirely her own.
Spiegel created “Music Mouse - An Intelligent Instrument” on...

Jonas Ruther: Drums, Piano

“The sound art of the Swiss trio Quiet Tree can be located in a musical square, in which programming, producing and musical virtuosity come together. With a keen sense for atmospheric moods, the music drifts through multi-faceted soundscapes. Euphorbia grooves, irritates and breathes the vastness and laconic tranquility of a Nordic landscape surrounded by an aura of melancholy. “Improvisation.

"Splintered Stories is the brilliant new CD by Sam Eastmond of the Spike Orchestra, whose sparkling arrangements of Masada compositions were a highlight of both "The Book of Angels" and Zorn's Book "Beri'ah."
Filled with startling instrumental colors, fiery solos, driving rhythms and moody harmonies, the music is brilliantly performed by this tight 15-piece big band and lovingly mixed by Marc Urselli. Cutting edge big band music for the 21st century by one of the most powerful ensembles working today!

Matthias Spillmann trumpet, flugelhorn
Andreas Lang double bass
Moritz Baumgärtner drums

"Getting to the core of the matter is what drives trumpeter Matthias Spillmann and his stage companions, Andreas Lang and Moritz Baumgärtner, in this CD recorded live. And this means to find the essence of this music genre we call jazz, using the repertory of its history, namely songs written by William C. Handy (“St. Louis Blues”), Billy Strayhorn (“A Flower is a Lovesome Thing”), Ornette Coleman...
