"Finally back in print: the acclaimed 2004 compilation of current underground folk music, as selected by Devendra Banhart. This is more than a compilation -- it's expertly sequenced and paced, like one long, slow flow of a particularly rich vibe. Liner...

"Not another all-star rehash of Jaco's fretless pyrotechnics, Gospel for J.F.P. instead targets the writing talents of the late, great genius of electric bass. It's easy to forget how good of a songwriter Jaco Pastorious was, as this saavy record reminds us via interpretations of some of his better and less known pieces. Its wide-screen approach is clear in the opener, 'Three Views of a Secret' - a delightful meeting between gypsy guitarist Bireli Lagrene, fusioneer Hiram Bullock and Uruguyan vocal...

'Tzadik artists and special guests paying tribute to one of the great geniuses of American music. Modern jazz greats (Horvitz, Frisell, Baron, Douglas, Medeski, Martin & Wood), rock luminaries (Quine, Patton, Ribot, Kramer, Honda, Holcomb) and experime...

I gotta say that Bolan was never one of my personal favorites, although I did buy one 45 by T. Rex when I was 12. Arto Lindsay, Vernon Reid, Marc Ribot & Buckethead, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Chris Cochrane & others play the music of man so in touch with...

''A superstar since the 1950's in his native France, Gainsbourg is barely known here in the US -- a condition this special tribute to his genius hopes in some way to remedy. 21 tracks by 21 artists -- over 74 minutes of music, all on one dynamic disc.'...

“The first volume in Glitterbeat's Hidden Musics, a series of unmediated field recordings of lesser-known global music traditions. War Is a Wound, Peace Is a Scar is a haunting audio document recorded in the summer of 2014 by Grammy-award winning producer Ian Brennan (Tinariwen, Malawi Mouse Boys, the Good Ones).
The sepia-tinged songs are sung and played live and direct by elderly Vietnamese musicians using half-forgotten traditional instruments. These musicians all have deep, personal connections...

“There are a mere handful of guitarists that have changed the way we think about the guitar over the past five or six decades. Pat Martino is perhaps one of the greatest and best-known of those icons.
The term "genius" is overused today, but Pat Martino was definitely one. His life story was the very definition of the word. Before Martino's passing in November, 2021, the Alternative...

"With this third volume of I Never Metaguitar, I'm thrilled at the notion of an ongoing process of discovery and the continuous pleasure of surprise at the inventions of these inventions: new sounds, processes, techniques, melodies, riffs, gestures...

"This is the second volume of “I Never Meta Guitar”, an ongoing compilation dedicated to the guitar, in its various possibilities and persuasions. It’s organized by one of the masters of this instrument, Elliott Sharp, and that says much about the...

"...and here is the fourth volume of this ongoing compilation organized by Elliott Sharp and covering «the parallel realities of contemporary guitarism». As Sharp himself wrote on previous liner-notes, each new collection of guitar pieces reflects «the never-ending joy of hearing fabulous sonic visions» with the guitar or its derivatives, as the main subject. You may not already know every chosen guitarist, but you will soon thanks to this series of recordings. Some of the artists need no presentations...

In 1979, Ptose emerged from Niort, France. They were an experimental trio who released quite a number of releases, singles, compilation appearances, etc during 7 years of existence and earning them some comparisons to The Residents, and then they dissapeared from view. I own one of their albums, Ignobles Limaces, with a wonderful Mark Beyer cover and it’s a fun listen all these years later.
Obviously they made more of an impression on other musicians than I would have guessed, as this 19 track...

“Compilation curated by Steven Stapleton (of Nurse with Wound) of creative-experimental-unlikely music, originally released in 1984.
Released on his United Dairies label that he had created with John Fothergill, he naturally called on Jean-Jacques Birgé and Francis Gorgé, who were then playing with Bernard Vitet in Un drame musical instantané. The compilation would be named In Fractured Silence.
Alongside Nurse With Wound and Un drame musical instantané, could be heard Hélène Sage (whom Birgé...

"The best known girl group in Texas during the late 60s was The Heart Beats of Lubbock. They made it to Hollywood for a Battle of the Bands contest on the Paul Revere and Mark Lindsay hosted TV show, Happening '68. The Heart Beats shut down all the other male groups and won the Battle of the Bands on nationwide TV. Considering that no one in the band was older than 17, this was quite an accomplishment.
All seven recordings by The Heart Beats are included on this album, along with other great female...

The roots of 'Brit-jazz' are right here. Conditionally recommended!

This compilation of electric Afro-pop of the 70s and 80s is charming, musical and hugely fun.

"Great East African "Kenya Special was one of Soundway Records' most popular releases and is considered a milestone in East African compilations. This time the team of compilers have gone to even greater lengths to share a small part of what is slowly being accepted as an essential element of East Africa's cultural heritage: the history of recorded popular music. The featured songs on Kenya Special...

“Klar!80: a label with no program This compilation represents an initial -- and long overdue -- foray into the years 1980-82, when Klar!80 was a cassette label, paired with a shop of the same name in Düsseldorf. Founded by Rainer Rabowski, Klar!80 released 18 cassettes of varying length and a box set containing three 12" vinyl EPs which fetch handsome prices among collectors nowadays. The Klar!80 - Ein Kassettenlabel aus Düsseldorf 1980-1982 collection reaches even further back in time than the Sammlung...

Charming and entertaining and (of course) funny tracks from 'swingin' Paris', 1966-1971.

"Fabrice, 17 years old, is a minet, or to say it better, a mod from one of the posh neighbourhoods, the 16th district in Paris and such “golden ghettoes”...

If you love/follow jazz of the 40s, you eventually end up here, if you didn't start here: with an appreciation and understanding of how the Hispanic (mostly Cuban, but others as well) residents of NYC mixed with the emerging boppers in the 40s and came...

For fans of psychedelic music, this compilation of tracks from 1969 - 1974 (late by US psych standards, but it took a few years for the patchouli oil to hit Africa) is well done and great fun and features music I doubt you have heard before. "This is v...

This is the ninth volume in the impressive Love, Peace & Poetry compilation series, following America, Latin America, Asia, UK, Japan, Brazil, Mexico and Africa. In Turkey, as the 1950s became the 1960s, just as in cities and towns across Britain and A...

“Crammed's legendary MADE TO MEASURE Series of New Music was described at the time as the aural equivalent of a collection of art books. Charting a map of some of the most interesting instrumental music of the era, thirty-five albums came out between 1983 and 1995. The loose idea behind the title of the series was: this is music which has been or could have been "made to measure" as a soundtrack for other media (film, theatre, dance, video).
Several years ago the label discreetly started...

“From the original authors behind the landmark Piccadilly Sunshine series and other evolutionary concepts!... Magic In The Air attempts to capture a wider perspective of the cultural revolution unfolding in Britain during the 1960s, while embracing the adolescent mindset at work at the dawn of an unprecedented era in modern culture. With the advent of the fab four the future of pop was inevitable but not predictable, as mono evolved into stereo and television went technicolour. In some ways, this is a...

"Inspired by punk and post punk, vibrant scenes dedicated to independent self-actualization by means of self-distributed cassettes - the cheapest and fastest medium - were developing on each side of the Cold War's confrontational line. Albeit, under quite different circumstances. While there was a DIY euphoria in the West, which would also have had ideological motives, subcultures in the East simply had no other means. Even the first act of replication meant moving into illegal territory, since every...

“Mixed Up Minds investigates the overlooked underbelly of British rock and pop from the late 1960s and early 1970s. “Mixed Up Minds Part 13 offers another tantalizing dose of forgotten dreams from the suburban drifts of Britain. In the aftermath of psychedelia, and in a less flamboyant 1970s, fading stars continued to shine as brightly, but to little acclaim. Amidst the glam rock and progressive bourgeoisie, pop songs knew their place, but for every T-Rex, 10cc, Bowie, and Queen, there was a more unlucky and less commercial other, sat in the underbelly of pomp and hysteria. Part 13 collects together 20 gems that were...

"Mixed Up Minds Part Fourteen offers another tantalizing dose of forgotten dreams from the suburban drifts of Britain. In the aftermath of psychedelia, and in a less flamboyant 1970s, fading stars continued to shine as brightly, but to much less acclaim. Amidst the glam rock and progressive bourgeoisie, pop songs knew their place, but for every T-Rex, 10cc, Bowie, and Queen, there was other more unlucky and less commercial artists that sat in the underbelly of pomp and hysteria. “Released in the summer of 1967, this oddball documentary focused on the more unconventional inhabitants of Hollywood, such as multi-millionaire Lewis Beech Marvin III (founder of the mysterious Moonfire cult), celebrity hairdresser Jay Sebring (later murdered by the Manson gang) and psychedelic pioneer Richard Alpert (an associate of Timothy Leary at Harvard). Its equally unconventional soundtrack boasts a rare performance from cult singer-songwriter Bobby Jameson, as well as garage rock from The...
