Synth / Electronic / Ambient

Synthesist Conrad is best known for being a founding member of Tangerine Dream and Kluster in the very, very early 70s, but he's made a lot of other music since that time. This very nicely presented CD includes his usual, wild electronic works, with a lov

"One of the great musicians for deep and dubby ambient-techno. This album is full of all the classic elements and sounds as associated with dub-techno, and more!. Nice layered swirling textures, drifting spacious ambient, swirls of deep techno & elements of house that add extra layers of warmth and depth to the already deep album. The albums thoughtful moods and textured atmosphere explore a exquisite journey across tectonic deep spacious dub-techno across beats and rhythms, yet also chilled calming...

Picture Music was Klaus' 3rd album and his first real 'synth' album to my mind. It's also the first album that has 'the Klaus sound' to my ears, even though his first two are also pretty good albums. This was recorded in 1973, but due to legal issues, was not released until 1975 on Brain.

"Re-release of the impressive Klaus Schulze album "Angst" - soundtrack for the disturbing movie of the same title by Gerald Kragl. Originally released in 1984. The film was actually shot after Klaus Schulze's score. He got the script and on the basis of the script, he wrote the music. Director Kragl told him, "You can write the music as you like - just stick to the script! I will cut the film to the music, not adapting the music to the film." Normally, the music takes its cue from the film but in this....

The first album by Klaus to be released outside of Germany, many people's first encounter with Klaus' monumental solo work began with this album and it's a great one. Highly recommended!

"Blackdance was my first album to be released in England on Caroline, a Virgin label. Before that [Virgin boss] Richard Branson had signed Tangerine Dream, and then he also contacted me. Of course, I said yes right away. Not just...

Klaus's seventh album was an album of music for a porno movie from 1977. This is more music created for the soundtrack and is yet another great CD from the great man of spacey electronics. This is a classic 70's space work & is a pretty necessary title in any collection. Written as a soundtrack for a porn film, this is 4 long tracks that ooze those classic Berlin space sounds and feature Harald Grosskopf on drums, which is alw

“Cyborg is a seminal work in abstract experimental electronic music. The psycho acoustic and hypnotic effects on the listener are incredible. This double album features almost similar electronic equipments used in “Irrlicht” (acoustic strings manipulations, molecular machines, primitive keyboards). This deep meditative and almost supernatural musical adventure...

This revisits a very obscure (I didn't even know it existed!) 1994 soundtrack to a French movie of the same title. It includes a bonus track recorded at the same sessions but not used in the film. It also adds a 16 minute track recorded in 2004 for use on a promotional-only CD of which only 300 were made.

New series of quality reissues from on Universal, who own the Brain catalog. This live album, originally released in 1980 was always one of his harder-to-find releases and it was also the end of the line of his amazing run of analog synthesizer classics. The next one after this was Dig It, his first digital album, which is quite a good work, but also the beginning of the next phase of his sound.

"Klaus Schulze's twelfth solo album was originally released in 1980 and received brilliant reviews...

Mirage was Klaus' 8th album and was recorded in January, 1977 and originally released in April, 1977 on Brain. This is somewhere in the middle of the absolute peak years for Klaus and his now huge bank of equipment. So, it's the top of the top.
This has a good, lengthy interview with Klaus about this album specifically and includes a very rare 20' bonus track, which has only been heard as a very short excerpt on a long-deleted sampler album! Essential to any collection of spacemusic.

One of Klaus's very finest albums ever (and that's really saying something), Moondawn was his sixth album and was originally released in 1976 on Brain.
Klaus plays 'the big Moog', Arp 2600, ARP Odyssey, EMS Synthi A, Farfisa organ and more, with great, sensitive drum accompaniment by Harold Grosskopf. Two side long tracks of classic, trance-like mantras, A stone, stoned classic. Highly recommended.

God knows how many albums later, Klaus is still making very good records. Not every one is very good, but this, his latest (as of May, 2018) sure is!

"Following the celebrations of his 70th birthday in August 2017, Klaus Schulze, one of the most important electronic music artists worldwide, has announced the release of his new studio recording Silhouettes for May 2018. The four pieces ´Silhouettes`, ´Der lange Blick zurück`, ´Quae simplex` and ´Châteaux faits des vent`, which he worked on between..

"Originally recorded in 2000 and only available in the rare and long deleted 10 CD boxset Contemporary Works, The Crime Of Suspense is a welcome addition to the Klaus Schulze re-release catalogue. On Good Old 4 On The Floor Schulze delivers a trance track classic with soul, while Overchill is refined by the beautiful voice of Julia Messenger. Two previously unreleased bonus tracks have been added to this definitive version of The Crime Of Suspense."

"For years J. Peter Schwalm's compositions and productions have been impressive proof of the power of sound without words. More consistent than ever, on his new album How We Fall, he creates sound sculptures that transcend common categories. Their structures can take on rough or gently curved forms, unfold associative or contemplative effects, and may even make the listener shiver. Schwalm's feel for nuances, tension arcs and individual sounds is based on talent and many years of experience....

"Since 1998 and for six years, Schwalm worked continually with Eno, releasing numerous joint works, including the album Drawn From Life and the soundtrack to the film Fear X by Nicholas Winding Refn, all the while giving celebrated joint performances in Europe and Japan. Since 2006, Schwalm has been repeatedly invited by the Punktfestival in Kristiansand, where he performed as celebrated live-remixer. As one of the most respected exponents of this particular art form, he collaborated with several well....

"Released in 1975 by Gull Records, Psi-Fi was the second album by SEVENTH WAVE, initially a studio project which was the brainchild of musicians KEN ELLIOTT and KIERAN O'CONNOR (previously with the pioneering group Second Hand).
Psi-Fi followed on from the acclaimed Things to Come (released the previous year) and was the result of many sessions at Chalk Farm Studios in London. Unlike the previous Seventh Wave album, Psi-Fi saw keyboard player / vocalist Ken Elliott and percussionist Kieran O'Connor...

"Released in 1974 by Gull Records, Things To Come was the brainchild of musicians KEN ELLIOTT and KIERAN O'CONNOR (previously with the pioneering group Second Hand).
The conceptual album was recorded at Chalk Farm Studios in London and was the result of many hours of meticulous overdubbing, with Ken Elliott playing an arsenal of keyboards and utilizing the latest synthesizer technology of the day (in addition to providing vocals), whilst Kieran O'Connor played a multitude of percussion....

"Fascinating and unreleased before music by Otto Sidharta, pioneer of Indonesian electronic music. Electronic compositions that integrated natural sounds and urban sounds to this extent were extremely rare at the time they were recorded, which in turn gives them a unique form of intensity. This collection is released as an entry in Sub Rosa's Early Electronic series.
Otto Sidharta was born in Bandung, Indonesia November 6, 1955. In 1978 he studied music composition in Jakarta Institute of Arts...

"Skylab's debut album came out of nowhere, showcasing a maddeningly well-constructed balance of downtempo experimental beat music and ambient- and musique concrete-leaning miscellany. Urban lore has it Ducasse spent a few weeks tripping in his attic to come up with the base tapes that bandmates Howie B. and Love TKO would fashion into #1. True or not it's a pretty apt accounting for what appears here."-AllMusic

Greatly weird, dubby/not dubby music from these five musicians, who work in very different worlds most of the time. This combines certain aspects of the weirder releases on ECM with the great releases done by Adrian Sherwood. Recommended!

"Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith composes her swirling, colorful electronic songs on Buchla synthesizers, particularly the portable, user-friendly Music Easel. Her warm, vibrant music inevitably recalls the work of Buchla masters such as Suzanne Ciani and Laurie Spiegel, but it's playful and exuberant enough to land her opening gigs for Dan Deacon and Animal Collective. It's bubbly and tranquil enough to elicit comparisons to 21st century underground synthesizer artists such as Panabrite or Dolphins into the...

"Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith composes bright, fluid soundscapes on a variety of synthesizers, most notably the Buchla Music Easel. Excited by the endless possibilities of electronic instruments, her music is filled with vivid, expressive melodies along with her warped, ethereal vocals. Smith grew up on the serene, peaceful Orcas Island in northwest Washington, and attended the Berklee College of Music in order to study composition and sound engineering. She started out as a vocalist before taking up....

This is a fabulous modern electronic music album from a newcomer and a veteran. Spacey, shimmery, fun, optimistic! Highly recommended!

"The 13th entry in RVNG Intl.'s Frkwys series follows the template of most of its predecessors in that it pairs one music veteran with a relative newcomer. That said, seldom have two artists been better paired than Suzanne Ciani and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. The former is an electronic and new age music pioneer who has received renewed attention thanks to a series of..

"Electronic duo Spring Heel Jack return with a collaboration with the legendary American trumpeter and Pulitzer Prize nominee Wadada Leo Smith. Wadada was born in the Mississippi Delta and became immersed in the music of the great blues masters as a young musician. He then moved to Chicago and became an early member of the AACM alongside the likes of Muhal Richard Abrams, Anthony Braxton, Malachi Favors and Roscoe Mitchell. Recorded 2017 in London, this LP sees Smith's authoritative trumpet joined by...

"Following the widely acclaimed 3LP collection, Electronic Music from the Seventies and Eighties, Unseen Worlds has compiled a second, 2LP collection of favorite and unreleased Carl Stone works. Electronic Music from the Eighties and Nineties presents the soothing, hallucinatory side of Stone's slow-evolving, time-bending composition. While we can't always identify the source, we can hear that his sounds come from somewhere, and that there is a "correct" or "complete" version of them in theory; and so...

"Otherworldly and anomalous, hushed and hallucinatory, Pauline Anna Strom’s unique style of inner space music reaches across time to futures and pasts far from our own. Trans-Millenia Music compiles eighty minutes of Strom’s most evocative work, composed and recorded between 1982 and 1988, for the first authorized overview of the enigmatic Bay Area composer. Pauline Anna Strom introduced her music to the world in 1982 with Trans-Millenia Consort, a collection of transportive synthesizer music...

"This newly compiled collection features the gorgeously ethereal Words With The Shamen mini album (recorded 1985) together with several rarities recorded during this period".

"This period", when David was hanging with, and taking strong lessons from collaborators Ryuichi Sakamoto, Jon Hassell, Holger Czukay, Steve Jansen and Robert Fripp, produced some really lovely ambient works, which can be found here, and which were originally released only on cassette! This is the rare and great one...

This reissues two separate album by this duo, that were originally issued in 1988 and 1989 and showcase the interest in 'sound' that both of these artists had.

"The real essence of this disc comes from the sound design, mixing, and processing. Sylvian and Czukay present this collection of atmospheres as a tight and cohesive soundscape. The gentle sway of the ambience is deep and comfortable. There are no dark overtones. Fans of Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, Markus Reuter and Liquid Mind will like this..

"The Japanese producer and DJ Kuniyuki Takahashi is the subject of Music From Memory's latest retrospective compilation with Early Tape Works (1986-1993). Composed of two volumes, the compilations gather together a selection of tracks from a tiny run of privately released tape only albums, highlighting a fascinating early period in Kuniyuki's musical output, one of which little is known. After discovering the world of nightclubs in Japan around 1986, and the seemingly boundless freedom expressed there...

This is a beautifully packaged and presented album of a bit noisy and extremely cool ambient music. This was recorded in a single live performance in Madison, WI in 2006.

I don't know anything about Taylor, but I gotta say that this is one of the very best ambient sound CDs I have heard in a very long time.

The fourth album on Palace Of Lights by one of my very favorite sound / ambient 'sound constructors' out there.

"Randstad is a kind of hermetic diary of a year living in the randstad—a term the Dutch use to describe their own megalopolis that encompasses Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. In its own way, the work runs contrary to today’s assumed absolute limitlessness of musical possibility, favoring a reduced expatriate sonic toolkit (composed of Cycling ’74’s Max, a modest Eurorack...

"In a world filled with terrible electronic music, it's nice to know that people like Amon exist."

"Amon Tobin's third album for Ninja Tune breaks out with a devastating opener, "Get Your Snack On." The track turns out to be just one of the highlights on Supermodified, a dense, plunderphonic kaleidoscope of an album with giant, noisy jazz breaks and groovy electronic synthwork. It's got quite a bit of the retro-sounding sampling of Permutation (orchestra strings, jazz combos, groovy psychedelic...

Theo has been smoothly moving back and forth between the jazz and the progressive rock worlds for some time and this set of spacey/spacious duets will continue to blur his resume!

"A reissue of Tyndall's Durch Die Zeiten, originally released in 1983. Having successfully released three albums, the Berlin-based electronic duo Tyndall fell out so badly with one another in 1983 that they ended up splitting the fourth album in two, taking a side each. Jürgen Krehan's half showcases his customarily nimble synth-pop, as well as several pieces influenced by classical music. Rudi Langer launches into celestial revelry on the other side, underpinned here and there by a driving beat...

"A reissue of Tyndall's third album, Reflexionen, originally released in 1982. The third Tyndall album is less experimental than the electronic duo's previous work from 1981 Traumland. The songs, featuring vocoder vocals, are more clearly structured into verses and choruses, the arrangements more considered. Stylistically, Reflexionen is a mix of synth-pop and electronic krautrock, at times not a million miles away from the early works of Andreas Dorau. More so than on their preceding instrumental...

"Tyndall's debut album, Sonnenlicht, originally released in 1980 on Sky Records. The two electronic sonic inventors Jürgen Krehan and Rudolf Langer founded Tyndall in the year 1980, naming their duo after a light scattering phenomenon in physics. Armed with an impressive array of instruments, devices, and home-made synthesizers, they created free and easy electronic music in the style of the Berlin School (Berliner Schule), much to the liking of the legendary Sky Records who released their debut album...
