This Swedish instrumental band love the classic Goblin and Fabio Frizzi soundtrack style progressive rock. This features folks who have also played with Anglagard, Mats/Morgan and more.
As good as anything as Goblin ever did (and better than some of what they did) - this is the soundtrack to your favorite scary scene playing behind your eyelids.
As the band themselves state, "with their roots in classic progressive rock they make perfect use of Hammond organs, Mellotrons and Moogs to create a...

“About this record and how Limpe and Paul Fuchs got together with Friedrich Gulda:

In 1968, the Austrian classical and jazz pianist Friedrich Gulda organized the First International Music Forum of Ossiachersee with the theme "Improvisation in Music -- Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow". During the third edition of the festival, Gulda got to know the band Anima Sound and was fascinated by their "absolute free music", which they played on home-made instruments.
Anima Sound was Limpe and Paul...

Never before released recordings from 1973!

“Limpe Fuchs studied piano, violin, and percussion in Munich, but all changed in the late 1960s when she met sculptor Paul Fuchs and discovered there was much more space to experiment and discover her own way as in the sculptural environment she had the chance to work directly with materials. Paul first built a horn as a sculpture (the famous Fuchshorn) and started experimenting with its sounds. Then he built a pedal kettledrum adding things to it like...

"Limited edition of 500 copies. Subliminal Sounds presents the spell-binding debut album from Swedish femme psych-folk/rock delight AnnaMy. Top-notch songwriting and stellar musicianship in a style reminiscent of the masters of the early 1970s such as...

First ever reissue from the original master tapes!

“Reissue of the 1970 krautrock classic. The timing was right: Five years earlier would have been too early, five years later would have been too late. But Annexus Quam from Kamp-Lintfort near Düsseldorf came along with the right music at the right moment.
The seven-piece band formed in 1967 as Ambition Of Music; they were what was then called a "beat group." In 1970, working with a local trombone choir led to a dramatic change of direction...

“ANUBIS comes within this new trend in French rock influenced at the same time by the "old" French school represented by ANGE, ATOLL, MONA LISA and by current French rock and songs. The group offers a music based on carefully selected vocal harmonies, the singer's high voice and the energetic straightforward themes during which the guitarist plays some very good, original and elaborate solos.”-La Discographie du Rock Français

“Late entry of the classic French Prog movement.Mainly guitar-driven...

“70s Chicago-area based band Apocalypse used their double-neck guitars to create chamber prog suites about faraway castles. Their lost 1976 LP (used as a demo), with male/female harmonies, violin, mellotron, and fuzzed-out guitars/keys has been unearthed by Steve "Plastic Crimewave" Krakow.
With their lengthy and tuneful musical odysseys, Apocalypse conjures the golden mid-70s progressive period of Renaissance, Soft Machine, ELP, Gentle Giant, and Genesis. Travel back in time with the Salvatori...

Legit, from the master-tapes reissue of this Finnish rarity from 1970. This was drummer Edward Vesala's first band, and he is joined by Harri Saksala-vocals, harmonica, Erero Lupari-guitars, Heimo Holopainen-bass. Since I also hear lots of keyboards....

"Apoteosi's very rare album contained relaxed symphonic rock with strong influences from early 18th century classical. Their music ranges from very quiet moments with acoustic guitar, string synthesizer, piano and flute to more powerful statements with bass, drums and electric guitar added in. Overall, there is a feeling of sophisticated beauty; if your taste is close to Renaissance, PFM & Genesis, this should appeal to you."-Scented Gardens Of The Mind

"Apoteosi were a very rare, if not the...

“Post Floral and pre-Yellow Magic Orchestra "all-star" band featuring among others Haruomi Hosono on bass and Takashi Matsumoto on drums. This album, produced by the Tokyo-based band, encapsulates a transformative moment in the nation's counterculture movement and its contribution to the global evolution of psychedelic music. With intricate guitar work, haunting vocals, and experimental compositions, the album remains an enduring influence in the global psychedelic music landscape. An all-time Japanese...

The fabulous Aquaserge return for their latest with a live album that features the extended version of the band.
Lovely, differently arranged and quite different overall versions of songs from their last two works. Hugely personally recommended!

"A well-kept secret until recently, Aquaserge has been a subterranean driving force in the international music scene.
The band's members have also been involved with Tame Impala, Stereolab, Melody's Echo Chamber, Aksak Maboul and Acid Mothers...

This short but lovely slab of vinyl-only Aquaserg was released towards the end of last year, but we only finally were able to stock it.
Should you start here? Only maybe. But if you are a fan, you gotta have it!

Great concept and based on a quick listen, one of their better releases (and that’s saying something!). Recommended.

“Always ready to expand their scope and blur the genre borders, the inventive, revered French avant-rock band have decided to tackle the field of contemporary classical music from the mid-20th century, in a special project which pays tribute to four major atypical figures: Giacinto Scelsi (1905-1988), György Ligeti (1923-2006), Edgard Varèse (1883-1965) and Morton Feldman...

“Hailing from Trondheim in Norway, Arabs in Aspic has been mid-Norway’s flagship of 70s inspired progressive rock and proto-hardrock for the past 15 years. They’ve been described as a sweet mixture of loud, heavy guitars and drums, 12 string acoustics, funky bass and percussion, screaming Hammond organs, soft Rhodes, Mellotrons and 70s Synths, topped with plentiful vocal harmonies.
The second release from Arabs in Aspic was "Far Out in Aradabia", which was released in 2004 on CD only. In their humble..

"The seventh full-length release from Norwegian band Arabs in Aspic, “Madness and Magic” offers songwriting that is both mature and whimsical at the same time, innocent and jaded. Rooted in the epic sound of 70s prog and rock bands, Arabs in Aspic carries a mystique about them, while being grounded in earthy sincerity. Featuring a more acoustic approach this time around, the material still holds a good amount of heaviness in its darkly tinged lyrics, as implied by the title, strewn with abundant melodic...

“Pictures in a Dream is the fourth album from Trondheim’s finest prog band Arabs in Aspic. Originally released by the Italian label Black Widow Records in 2013, the album received great immediate feedback internationally and resulted in a good amount of concerts on the continent. Their love for experimenting with sounds and recordings shines through on this album, with some rather unconventional solutions - Using lots of microphones to capture the sound of the room instead of the sources, 9 microphones...

“Syndenes magi” was the sixth Arabs in Aspic album, and a turning point in their long career. After “Pictures in a Dream” and “Victim of your Father’s agony” the structure of “the new Arabs” was set. They had lots of songs ready to go, but after attending a spectacular King Crimson gig in Oslo they decided that their new material wasn’t up to par, and they had to do better. The next day Jostein Smeby went back home to Trondheim, and wrote what turned into the 12-minute song «Syndenes Magi». He called up...

“Victim of your Father’s Agony is the fifth album from Trondheim’s finest prog band Arabs in Aspic. Originally released by the Italian label Black Widow Records in 2015, this album may be their most diverse to date, due to the large number of songwriters compared to the other records.
This new version of the album starts with a short instrumental inspired by the band’s first concert in France, playing a gig in the sunset, 300 meters from the most beautiful beaches of the Atlantic with 2000 ecstatic...

This is a new project by the drummer of Mastodon, who shares vocals with bassist Troy Sanders. Drums, bass, 2 synthi performers and vocals give a sound like a full band version of Zombi!

Craig Fortnam: voice, guitars, piano, Philicorda organ, monosynth, percussion
James Larcombe: melodeon, dulcitone, wind organ, Philicorda organ, monosynth, piano
special guest:
Pete Aves: pedal steel guitar on 'Open My Eye'

This is one of those albums that seems simple and acoustic-oriented and straightforward and when you really listen to it, you realize that it actually is anything BUT simple. Conditionally recommended.

“North Sea Radio Orchestra's Craig Fortnam and...

At its best, this actually really does sound like the great Archemedes Badkar actually BEING great. At its worst, it kinda sounds like the Dead.

“Archimedes Badkar was started by Per Tjernberg in 1972 and between 1975 and 1979 released four LPs. Recently, three of the original members plus four newcomers gathered in Silence's legendary studio in Koppom. There were two CDs and LPs, 102 minutes of music, mostly from lively first shots.
Badkar looked around the world early, absorbed music...

“Originally released on Rolf Ulrich Kaiser’s legendary Pilz label, this is Ardo Dombec’s first vinyl re-release. Unusual rhythms, slightly jazzy. Full lp-sized booklet with large band story, Pilz story, discography, photographs...
After the re-issue of almost all of the legendary Pilz-label records, Ardo Dombec’s one and only LP (Pilz 2021095-2) is now available as well. The intricate rhythms and jazzy touches of this Hamburg band were at the time quite unusual for a label specialised in folk...

The 4th album from the band that I consider to be possibly the finest Italian progressive rock band of the 1970's, & certainly a band in the top tier of all early 1970's progressive bands worldwide!
Area combined jazz/rock/stolen ethnic music (mostly from Eastern Europe and the Middle East)/the avant garde and more. Superb playing from all (vocals/organ, guitar, electric piano/synths, bass & drums).
While everyone shines, the vocalist, the late Demetrio Stratos, is rightly one of the legends...

This is the first time that this 90s ‘best of’ collection by Area has appeared on vinyl. Issued in a numbered, limited edition of 500 and on orange vinyl!
Included are, indeed, some of the band’s best:
Luglio, Agosto, Settembre (Nero)
Arbeit Macht Frei
L'Abbattimento Dello Zeppelin
Cometa Rossa
Lobotomia
L'Elefante Bianco
La Mela Di Odessa
Gioia E Rivoluzione
L'Internazionale
Evaporazione
Il Massacro Di Brandenburgo Numero Tre In Sol Maggior

Patrizio Fariselli – piano, keyboards
Claudia Tellini – vocals
Marco Micheli – electric bass
Walter Paoli – drums

“Patrizio Fariselli, Claudia Tellini, Marco Micheli and Walter Paoli live in Tokyo in an amazing concert on May 18th 2019 at JAZZ ROCK LEGENDS!
In addition to the music taken from the recent "100 GHOSTS" by Patrizio Fariselli, the group presented the most famous pieces of the historical repertoire of AREA beautifully sung, after the death of Demetrio Stratos, by the

"Following their groundbreaking collaboration with the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Comme à la Radio, Areski and Brigitte Fontaine began recording almost exclusively together as a duo. Originally released in 1973, Je Ne Connais Pas Cet Homme is their first record billed under both names.
Deeply rooted in North African and European folk traditions, the album features evocative vignettes with breezy vocals and minimal accompaniment of classical guitar, strings and woodwinds. As always, there is a...

“What happens when the world's most raucous rock/fusion instrumental power trio decides to make a concept album? You get Duck, the story of a web-footed Antarctic Island native fleeing a penguin policeman to New York City...where considerable misadventure and danger await. The Aristocrats - Guthrie Govan/guitar, Bryan Beller/bass, Marco Minnemann/drums - have created a kaleidoscopic musical universe, employing both trademark genre pastiches and inventive new arrangement explorations - some surprisingly...

“The Art Ensemble of Chicago's latest album, recorded in Paris, where the group was formed over 50 years ago. Recorded in France in 2020 at the Son d' hiver festival, this recording celebrates the legendary group's historic ties to Paris, where it was formed in 1968.
When trumpet great Lester Bowie died in 1999, followers of the Art Ensemble of Chicago couldn't help but wonder whether the legendary quintet, which owed so much to his special and outlandish gifts, would - or should - go on. That it did.

Art Zoyd's early and great works have been unavailable for such a long time that it's too easy to forget what a strikingly original and amazing band they were in their prime.

One of the original R.I.O bands (they joined in the second wave of...

“Jonathan Coe hoped for a career in music before becoming a celebrated novelist, playing keyboards in various bands before What a Carve Up! established his career as a writer in 1994.
The Rotters' Club, a winner of the Wodehouse Prize in 2001, got its name from the title of an album by Hatfield and the North, giving a clue to his interest in the progressive rock and jazz-rock fusion music of the 1970s. He has collaborated with the High Llamas, Theo Travis and Louis Philippe, and now with Italy's...

“Edward Artemiev's re-recording of his scores to Andrei Tarkovsky's classic films Зеркало (Mirror) (1975) and Сталкер (Stalker) (1979), reissued on 180-gram vinyl.
When Artemiev recorded these scores in Moscow in 1989 and '90, there were no legitimately available releases of the original soundtracks. Artemiev chose to fill that void himself with these recordings, released on Torso Kino in the Netherlands as part of a 1990 double-LP set also containing re-recordings of Artemiev's score to Солярис...

Lautaro Acosta – vioin
Furio Chirico – drums
Roberto Puggioni – electric bass
Gigi Venegoni – electric guitar
Piero Mortara – accordion, keyboards, piano

A revamped lineup of one of the best jazz/rock bands to emerge from Italy perform in front of a clearly excited audience in Japan. Happily this includes main composer and original leader Gigi Venegoni, who wasn’t with the band when I saw them a decade ago!

“One of the most important historical bands of Italian progress

PLEASE NOTE: New, but printed INNER SLEEVES have seam splits. Limited, numbered edition of 500 copies on blue vinyl.

Arti E Mestieri were one of THE great Italian bands of the early 70's. This is their *classic* 1st, which features a quite fantastic predominantly instrumental fusion-based progressive music based around sax, violin, keyboards, guitar, bass & drums. While there are not a lot of vocals, what there are are excellent. I can't recommend this highly enough.

Etienne Jaumet - alto saxophone, synth
Gilbert Artman - electronic drums, groovebox, harmonium, xylophone

One of the great greybeards of French new music (Urban Sax, Lard Free, etc) meets a representative of the next generation of sonic explorers for a lovely, low-key album!

“A great discovery, it reminds me of Confluence (Arkham) which I haven't listened to for a long time. Beautiful atmospheres!”-Christophe Genu

“Previously unreleased heavy acid-rock/proto-prog album from 1972. Asgard (initially known as Osgoode, named after the street where Blue Cheer had their headquarters) was a San Francisco band featuring ace guitar player Bob Hardy (a veteran of many Bay Area bands since the early '60s) and Jake "Gelon" Lau (Gideon & Power, Mary McCreary, Tribe) on electric violin and vocals.
This is their lost album, registered at Roy Chen Recorders in 1972, now released for the first time. For Asgard features nine....

“Transparent vinyl version. First-ever official reissue on vinyl since 1975. 350 gram Quadro Fold Out Sleeve that exactly replicates complex/original OHR die-cut jacket, A2 Poster, 2x (German and English) A4 Inlay with Original Bio Sheet written by Manuel Göttsching (1970). Pressed at Optimal, Germany.”

The incredible power trio (guitar, bass, drums) first effort from 1971 by Germany's Ash Ra Tempel has Manuel Gottsching (guitar), Harmut Enke (bass) and Klaus Schulze (drums - this is...

This is the Ash Ra Tempel "reunion" live reunion show from April 2000, announced by the very excited MC at the beginning that they are playing together for the first time in 30 years. I guess Mr MC never heard any of the work Klaus and Manuel did together in the 80s and 90s. This is still really good stuff though!

“Julian Cope (author of "Krautrock-Sampler") had invited Schulze and Göttsching to his "Cornucopia Festival" in London, and the two musicians took the offer as a great opportunity for a..

The very good, if somewhat overlooked fourth album by this legendary Krautrock ensemble.
The band's fourth album, this is the first time since their self-titled first that you have the trio of Manuel Gottsching (guitar), Harmut Enke (bass) and Klaus Schulze (drums + keyboards). Additionally, Rossi appears on vocals (sort of a proto 'space whisper' ala Gong).
Not an intense album like their first, but still real nice.

"MG.ART announce the authorized 50th anniversary edition of Ash Ra Tempel's Schwingungen, originally released in 1972. One of the most important German krautrock albums. Re-cut carefully overseen by Manuel Göttsching himself. Gatefold sleeve with sticker; Includes original release sheet and inlay."

The second album by this legendary Krautrock ensemble, remastered by Manuel Göttsching himself!
Their 2nd album came out in 1972, & was quite a bit different from the first, as Klaus Schulze had...

This is a CLASSIC and was where I discovered the wonders of Manuel Gottsching!
The sixth album by Ash Ra Tempel, this was actually Manuel Gottsching's first solo album. Recorded at home with a Teac 4 track, & released in 1974, it's an absolute classic of echo'd, multi-tracked guitar trance/space-out wizardry. Three long, appropriately named tracks ("Echo Waves," "Quasarsphere," "Pluralis"). This belongs in the collection of anyone interested in space or trance music.

"Manuel played his...

The fairly insane third album where Timothy Leary, on the run from the Feds, ends up in Switzerland surrounded by happy hippies. Remastered by Manuel Göttsching himself!

Their third album was named after the LSD-laced soft drink that these guys were now ingesting by the caseload. A big psychedelic / spaceout jam type disc, with the side long live track being a real highlight. This does have some pretty great moments (the live side being pretty outstanding overall) (& if you are a fan of stoned...

"2015 live recording from the Supersense Festival in Melbourne, previously unreleased, featuring a supergroup of Manuel Göttsching, Ariel Pink, Oren Ambarchi, and Shags Chamberlain playing material from classic Ash Ra Tempel releases, 1972's Schwingungen (and 1973's Seven Up."

"Out of the blue -- I was invited to perform in Melbourne, Australia. It happened thanks to my dear old friend Mick Glossop, who made the suggestion to Sophia Brous, at the time the curator of a music-festival called...

“Initially released in 1982 as part of the Wave Notation series (which includes Hiroshi Yoshimura's Music For Nine Postcards), Still Way is, without a doubt, a seminal Japanese environmental/ambient/minimalism album, often mentioned alongside Midori Takada's Through The Looking Glass (1983) and Hiroshi Yoshimura's Green (1986) as one of the genre's most important pieces. "Like the moment of stillness, after the wind passes through the garden, when the rain stops for a brief second..." Notably inspired...

“Dizzying close harmonies and indestructible grooves on this lost classic from Ethiopia's Golden Age.
Aselefech Ashine and Getenesh Kebret, two young women raised in the bustling cosmopolitan milieu of late-empire Addis Ababa, released one single and a full-length LP in 1976 before disappearing from the music business entirely. Originally released on Kaifa, the label responsible for some of the heaviest and funkiest Ethiopian records of all time, Beauties was a hit, selling out in a few days. But it..

"On Automatic Writing, Robert Ashley composes under the influence of his 'involuntary speech.' (In his liner notes, Ashley revealed that he suffered from 'a mild form of Tourette's.') The piece starts quietly, with scraps of Ashley's mild, tremulous voice arranged next to more fluid French translations and barely-there touches of Moog. After Ashley's phrases lengthen enough to encompass sense-making phrases, a bass-register groove briefly appears, vanishes, then returns. Few pieces so quiet have...

“I'd Rather Be Lucky Than Good is a new recording collaboration of Sam Ashley and Werner Durand. Sam Ashley's mystic parables imbued with benevolent humor are drawn from a lifelong pursuit of a present-day shamanism. Werner Durand's wind work on invented and traditional instruments stems from the minimalist tradition, routed through his unique study of obscure world musics.
The two artists first met in Berlin in 1984 while Sam was touring Atalanta with Robert Ashley's opera company, with whom he...

"A French-Turkish band that recorded two albums in the late 70's then split. Their sound could be related to a mesh between Snow Goose period Camel, King Crimson type guitar pyrotechnics, and the very French sound of bands like Pulsar and Ange, with some slight jazz influences. Vocals are sung in English, and sung well. (Between Flesh and Divine) is absolutely essential.(It) is a classic of French symphonic rock."-Gibraltar Encyclopedia Of Progressive Rock

"One of the many fantastic, obscure European progressive bands to be unearthed and made available to the prog-buying public by the French label Musea is Asia Minor, who only released two very small-time albums in the late '70s. This Turkish/French band created some great symphonic progressive rock tinged vith a subtle, unique middle-eastern twist which helps guarantee their singular niche in the world of progressive rock.
This is the first of Asia Minor's two albums and from what I have heard of the...

Setrak Bakirel / vocals, guitar
Eril Tekeli / flute, guitar
Evelyne Kandel / bass
Micha Rousseau / keyboards
Julien Tekeyan / drums

“How did I miss this? A new Asia Minor album? Finally, more "moon madness"! That's crazy! Asia Minor has long been shrouded in mystery to me. They released two excellent albums in 1979 and 1981 (including the great Between Flesh and Divine, in my opinion the best prog album of the 1980s, certainly holds its own with Moving Pictures and Misplaced...
