Amorphous Androgynous / Peter Hammill - We Persuade Ourselves We Are Immortal CD

SKU 28-JMPP3900498.2
“The Amorphous Androgynous return with the symphonic, 40-minute prog space-rock concept album We Persuade Ourselves We Are Immortal. The album contains 5 epic parts, featuring the legendary Peter Hammill (the Van Der Graaf Generator) on vocals alongside a host of musicians including: Paul Weller (piano and guitar), Ray Fenwick (Spencer Davis Group/Ian Gillan) on lead guitar, Brian Hopper (Caravan/Soft Machine) on sax. The Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir and a 25-piece live orchestral string section round out this sumptuously-recorded album.

We Persuade Ourselves We Are Immortal opens with the 13-minute epic of the title track (written with Peter Hammill and Paul Weller). The themes of mortality / immortality are then musically and conceptually catapulted to the far-flung corners of the AA sonic multiverse over 40+ minutes. Channelling A Space Odyssey, the dystopian choirs and moog of Hymortality crash full-force into the John-Bonham-like drums of The Immortality Break. Meanwhile, Synthony On A Theme of Mortality lives up to its name, utilizing the classic 70s Yamaha CS80 synth before progressing to a female wailing aria against classic vintage guitar rock. The whole cosmic trip cascades finally into the harp daydream reverie, choir and romantic strings of Physically I’m Here, Mentally Far, Far Away.”

“Right off the top I own everything from these guys and their original band future sound of London so I’m biased but that aside this album is fantastic... production is insanely good... analog synths galore.. orchestral flourishes.. some searing guitar work... big drama.. plus it has Paul Weller ... how can you go wrong? This is heavily influenced by 70s prog but without the cheesy over indulgence... sits well beside Pink Floyd’s instrumental breaks ... lots of mellotron .. choral female vocals.... may be the best album by AA... but then again I pretty much love everything they do...oh yeah Peter Hammill is obviously the key player here but the Future Sound Of London lads are the brainchild behind this as usual......”-Elan Bodwick

I like this....but I still don't know if I "get" it totally? I recall years ago some "rare record" catalog said ,"...this sounds like a mix of Pink Floyd and Van Der Graaf." of some album or another , and I thought, "Man, That would be WEIRD!" Well, here that album really IS! Now I will say it's more Pink Floyd than VDGG,...and I was hoping for more Peter Hammill input. So , like I thought about that description long ago, ...this is sort of weird. It's going to take me a while to wrap my mind around this, and that's not to say that's a bad thing. But one of the aspects of this project that hits me a bit off-center is that FSOL is no Pink Floyd and the music here is good,...but it is VERY obvious what PF songs they have molded these tracks from (I won't tell you...you'll hear for yourself!). So, Listen with an open mind...and a bit of forgiveness,...and maybe you will love this one?! It's interesting....but I would have loved a lot more PH lyrical input to carry this past it's PF references.
