Arteria are a new, instrumental, avant-progressive Mexican ensemble, led by bassoonist Juan Carlos Ruiz, who was also one of the key musicians of Nazca and Culto sin Nombre. Like Nazca and Culto sin Nombre, the music is hugely influenced by the early sound of Univers Zero. In addition to Juan Carlos, also appearing is Adolfo Zaragoza Cerecero (guitar), Mari Carmen Gaue (electric cello) and former Iconoclasta member Victor Baldovinos (drums) as well as electronic programming, which adds a nice and contemporary (and original) touch to the proceedings here. With Nazca, Juan Carlos was one of the better (and earliest) musicians using the 'UZ' vibe as a base for his own creative explorations and with Arteria, which has the best compositions for one of his groups that I've heard, he's reached a new peak. You need something to scratch that "Heresie" itch? It's right here! Highly recommended.
"Juan Carlos Ruiz is a veteran composer, a soul that has given the music and who has left parts of his gut and his heart in some groups like Nazca and Cult With No Name (Culto Sin Nombre), among others. A couple of years ago he began to gestate in the middle of gray, black and white colors, a new group called Arteria, avant-garde quartet that debuts today with this album you have in your hands. Like the music that preceded it, Arteria is a manifestation of the gloom, an announcement, usually ominous, of the horror, of the hollows, of the unfortunate. And in this vocation, Juan Carlos Ruiz is accompanied by MariCarmen Graue, Victor Baldovinos and Adolfo Zaragoza, three players of proven ability but with little affection for indulgent virtuosity. Instead, they have laid their virtues in the hands of the instigator of this project who could not postpone the possibility of becoming a demiurge, who has assumed the task of moving harmoniously the threads of a thin web. In fact, rather than an orchestrator or a leader, the bassoonist is a painter decided to sketch the creepy, to give body and volume to the darkness. It has a track record under his arm where the impressionist landscapes abound, the brush strokes inspired by gothic literature, the stories of a group of authors who, like him, are comfortable living in otherness."
