For my money, Nik Bärtsch's Ronin are one of the THE most exciting and interesting jazz groups out there right now for many reasons, but certainly for the reason that they stretch the boundaries of jazz so far! Elements of minimalism and a huge amount of polyrhythmic work bring to mind Glass and Reich, but Phil and Steve NEVER rocked like this band can!
Having seen them live, I can attest to the huge, huge power of their shows and it is with pleasure and a bit of surprise that I saw that ECM were releasing a live album by the group. This is a perfect place to start with this great band. What isn't perfect is that this captures the band just before some huge transitions for them, as long-time bassist Björn Mayer has left (replaced very well by Thomy Jordi, but still...) and now it has just been announced that percussionist Andi Pupato has left as well! Whatever the future will bring this band, I am sure it will be exciting. Highly and hugely recommended.

"Ronin around the world: a powerful and atmospheric concert recording with music captured in Germany, Austria, Holland, England, and Japan, a double-album which transmits the live impact of Nik Bärtsch’s band and its enveloping modular groove music of interlocking rhythms. It’s also a set that marks the end of an era and the transition into a new one. These are the last recordings of Ronin with Björn Meyer’s elegantly-leaping bass guitar as one of the lead voices, and Bärtsch views the album as partly a tribute to Meyer’s long tenure with the band. New bassist Thomy Jordi, meanwhile, makes an impressive entrance on “Modul 55”, but it’s most often the whole band, as a unified field of force, that commands the listener’s attention."
