B'Shnorkestra - Global Concertos
Composer / band leader / trumpeter Samantha Boshnack gained *my* attention for her first release with this 14 piece big band, entitled "Go To Orange", which came out of nowhere and hugely impressed me with its maturity.
This is the somewhat different (more world music influences) but equally poised follow up and it is another excellent unclassifiable-but-still-jazz release. Highly recommended!
"In light of a career that has taken her around the proverbial world and back again, it was only natural that composer Samantha Boshnack should bottle that inspiration into the multi-sensory perfume of Global Concertos, a project for which she wrote five distinct pieces for as many world-class soloists, resulting in an ambitious mélange of world music, classical, and jazz that brims with an integrity all its own.
Though Boshnack was uncertain whether Global Concertos was to have an afterlife as an album, these performances— recorded live on May 9, 2015 at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute in Seattle—brought out a magic that clearly needed to be heard
The project was also an opportunity for Boshnack to highlight the talents of her B’shnorkestra, an alternative chamber orchestra whose five years of collaboration nourished a confident execution."
