Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin - Nine Hundred Nights DVD (special)

SKU 11-EE 30047
This very nice DVD spotlights the brief reign of this star-crossed, pivotal San Francisco psychedelic band, who were quite cool in a truly psychedelic, 1967 way, but who had the fortune of a star-singer as a integrated member of the band, and the mis-fortune to be in the way when the powers that be decided that she was the star and that those hippies were holding her back. Includes rarely seen Generation Club footage, seen and unseen footage from Monterey Pop, the Cheap Thrills recording session and rehearsal and studio performances. Lots of nice extras too, including "psychedelic treats".

This only loses one star because it's pre-Cheap Thrills era. BUT it is a great document of a time when Janis was just one of the "guys" in the band. You get to see her just starting to put herself forward,...and the band wails! Good commentary, and fun abounds. Janis is even happy at this time. It proves to me what they say is probably right...the record company drove a wedge between her and this band(saying they were below her abilities). She could have gone on with Big Brother ,and maybe not lost herself in a total drug-haze of self doubt and worry? Anyway, see how it all began....and enjoy!
