Burton, Gary - Lofty Fake Anagram / A Genuine Tong Funeral 2 x CDs (Mega Blowout Sale)

SKU 23-BGO 723
Two of Burton's best known early works. Lofty Fake Anagram was the second release (from 1967) by this particular lineup of Gary's quartet (guitarist Larry Coryell, bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Bob Moses).

This is very early jazz/rock fusion, & while quite tame compared to Miles' or the Soft Machine's work of just 2 years later, keep in mind how early this was and you'll be able to appreciate that there's some pretty good & exciting interplay here, and what a good listen this is.

Until the 1st reissue in 1997, Tong Funeral was a hugely sought after album, as it is one of Carla Bley's first composed works available (1967). The entire album was written by Carla, & features Gary's band at that time: Gary Burton-vibes, Larry Coryell-guitar, Steve Swallow-bass and Bob Moses-drums. A large number of guests help out (you don't expect a mere quartet to host a *genuine* tong funeral, do you?): Steve Lacy-soprano sax, Mike Mantler-trumpet, Gato Barbieri-tenor sax, Jimmy Knepper-trombone, Howard Johnson-tuba, baritone sax and Carla herself on piano, organ & conductor.
