"When the Oxford Jazz Masters Series was conceived Lol Coxhill was naturally in the first list of guest “Masters”; we made sure that such a concert would be recorded for future release – and here it is. The CD is a true record of the concert in March 2006, with the quartet, solo and trio pieces. On the night Lol had to leave us before the end of the proceedings – hence the ‘farewell to Lol’ during track 4 and his complete absence on track 5. Lol is one of those musicians who instantly becomes an essential and leading element of any group he plays in and I think this aspect of his playing is very evident here – the soprano sax and tarogato weaving together as brothers and the relaxed but positive support of the piano and bass."
