If you need to compare the Galactic Cowboy Orchestra's sound to just one band, your best bet would be later-period Dregs, a jazz-fusion sound, but with even more bluegrass mixed in. Also comparable to the much lesser known Dreadnaught and even Boud Deun at times. All instrumental, they play guitar, violin, bass and drums and they really can play their instruments.
"It’s country. It’s rock. It’s jazz. It’s bug-eyed bluegrass from Zeta Reticuli. It’s swing. It’s interstellar folk music.. … Whatever it sounds like to earthlings, there is no mistaking the virtuoso strains and the star trekking fun of The Galactic Cowboy Orchestra, the ultimate cosmic country fusion band. Veterans of appearances on everything from A Prairie Home Companion to a February 2009 all-star tribute to Buddy Holly at the legendary Surf Ballroom with Graham Nash, Los Lobos, Wanda Jackson and others, the seasoned space cowboys make music that ranges from highly accessible bluegrass tunes to extreme arrangements of East Indian ragas — and lots of musical stops in between onstage and on their new album. “Lookin' for a Little Strange represents the creative intersection of our individual musical experiences that come together in a sound that is much more orchestral than you could ever imagine with a four-piece combo,” says John Wright. “We like to think of it as Mayberry meets Mahavishnu. We can do toe-tappin’ front porch country and then stretch its DNA into other dimensions for an effect that’s part hoe-down and jam band. We know there’s a wide audience for what we do that enjoys our musical adventures as much as we enjoy making them.'”
