Really excellent album of guitar-based Brazilian jazz. All instrumental except for one song, this features Guinga-guitar & vocal, Paulo Sergio Santos-clarinet, Jorginhodo Trompete-trumpet, Lula Galvao-guitar and Gabriele Mirabassi-clarinet. Although only modestly well-known here, Guinga has been making Brazilian and Brazilian jazz music for over 40 years. In addition to his fine guitarwork, his compositions have been recorded by many well known Brazilian artists. Comes in a nice, hard-cover book package with photos and notes. Conditionally recommended!
"Take Gershwin, Ravel, Cole Porter and Puccini, mix them together well and let them brown in the tropical sun of Rio de Janeiro. Roll them down the slope separating twentieth and twenty-first century carioca, where different strains of Brazilian music mix together, then introduce them to Villa Lobos and Jobim, and you will have a rough but reasonable idea of what Guinga’s music is all about. His work is both “high art” and popular music at the same time. The melodies unwind with incredible naturalness and lyricism, resting on harmonic progressions of unusual and irregular unpredictability. Listening to Guinga’s music is like plunging into diverse harmonies from Ernesto Nazareth to Michel Legrand, Villa- Lobos to Ravel, Gershwin to Nino Rota, Pixinguinha to Cole Porter, Bela Bartok to Radames Grattali, Vernon Duke to Hermeto Pascoal and Gabriel Fauré to Barney Kessel.
