There are too many talented people people out there who slog away for years, with a distinctive sound to offer, but still not very much attention. Yvette Perez is one of these people - her sound probably isn't for everyone, but it is HER sound and she's developed it over a number of years. "Songs About the Mysteries of Housework and Nature is the debut CD by NYC pop/experimental dream makers H.E.R. Songstress Yvette Perez plays keyboards and sings while trombonist Peter Zummo rambles through a thicket of electronic ambience in an experiment of memory and obsession. Beautiful and haunting, Songs About the Mysteries...tells stories about the conflicts of domestic habits with the outer world: the trouble with concentration in a dirty house (“Unruly Place”), the invasion of dust and the shore (“Dusty Beach”), suburban corporate housing vs. marshland (“Owings Mills”), an office worker facing lay-off and lost birds (“The Office”), and the end of monarch butterflies in transit (“This Migration is Over”). Prior to her involvement in the Williamsburg indie music scene Perez played in Western Mass bands during the nineties, while studying with Yusef Lateef and Roger Reynolds. As part of Phil Niblock’s minimalist crew, Peter Zummo is a versatile downtown figure who has worked with too many to name, but most notably: Arthur Russell, whom he helped define “avant-disco” with, pianist “Blue” Gene Tyranny, and the legendary Teo Macero. In H.E.R., Zummo sensitively crafts his signature melodies that blend minimalism, jazz and pop influences in songs that blur the line between improv and song; between prismatic recollection and blighted reality.... Yvette’s stylized Dagmar Krouse-esque vocals in Birdbrain are further developed in the seductive, dreamy songs of H_E_R, and her velvety voice brings to mind singers such as Juana Molina, Annette Peacock and Bridget Fontaine. Songs About the Mysteries of Housework and Nature combines studio tracks and live performances from the late NYC venue Tonic that feature unpredictably generated electronic processing that acts as the project’s third ghost member. Vibraphonist/percussionist Danny Tunick (who has recorded for Ecstatic Peace, Tzadik and Bang On a Can All Stars) joins the duo with delicate vibes and sensuous beats on the studio tracks.
