Harrison, Joel - Urban Myths

SKU 17-HIGHNOTE7194
"Joel Harrison is a wildly diverse musician with a penchant for unorthodox instrumental combinations who has sustained one of the most unpredictable discographies of the last decade. Here Joel, along with David Binney, Stephan Crump & others sets his focus on the electric jazz of Chick Corea, Zawinul and Shorter, Frank Zappa & others that influenced him growing up in the 1970’s."

Excellent sextet group playing modern electric jazz/jazz-rock that is obviously being made now, but harkins back in terms of the sounds and the sense of adventurousness to the 1970s (i.e. this isn't bland fusion with some show-off licks, but good compositions with good and compact solos). In some ways, I suppose that this could be considered a US variant on a group like Forgas Band Phenomena with the mid-sized group lineup and attention to composition. Good playing from everyone on the disc:
Joel Harrison-guitar
David Binney-alto sax
Christian Howe-violin
Daniel Kelly-keyboards
Stephan Crump-acoustic bass
Jordan Perrson-drums
plus guests on electric bass, trumpet, trombone and tenor sax. Nicely done and recommended.
