"One of the best 70's keyboard/Prog albums, by a very underrated player. A man up there with Wakeman, et al for technique & talent.
Why this has not been picked up for remastering & rerelease, I do not know."
"Upon his return to England Mackay became a member of Ginger Baker and the Gurvitz brothers and also started rehearsing with Colosseum II, although he exit the band far too early to record anything with them. Next in line would be his participation in Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel and the writing of his second album ''Score'' (1977, EMI).
This one featured a very strong team, ex-Brian Auger's Oblivion Express Clive Chaman on bass and three members of King Crimson, John Wetton on vocals, Andy McCulloch on drums and Mel Collins on flute.
While ''Chimera'' was more of an Emerson, Lake & Palmer-like offering, ''Score'' shows some diversity within the lines of Symphonic Rock, propably due to a wider participating team and instrumental armour. There's no doubt that some tracks continue in the vein of schizophenic keyboard Prog with twists, turns, solos with Mackay being the absolute holder of all things, performing on acoustic piano, Hammond organ and synthesizer. But several of them present the early roots of British Prog, adding some nice flute parts, sentimental vocals, orchestral sections in the style of Gordon Giltrap, featuring many romantic sections and melodic lines.
Overall this one sounds tighter and more professional than ''Chimera'', although not much stronger in the composing department."-rateyourmusic
