Mingus, Charles - Tonight at Noon
You all know that I consider Charles one of the great composers of the 20th century, so I'm biased here, but basically all of his 50s/early 60s Atlantic recordings are fantastic and this is no exception. This 1964 album was made up of unreleased sessions from 1957 (with Jimmy Knepper, Shafi Hadi, Wade Legge adn Dannie Richmond) and 1961 (with Knepper, Richmond, Booker Ervin, Doug Watkins and Roland Kirk). The 1961 session is from the odd session where Charles decided to become the pianist in the band and he doesn't touch his bass! "Hardcore jazz at its most celebratory, with master Mingus leading the charge."
