Mingus, Charles - Live At Montreux 1975 DVD

SKU 28-EGVS39047DVD
I saw Charles and his fine band during this tour in NYC, doing tracks from Changes One and Changes Two, just like here. I can die knowing I saw Mingus. The band here - just like when I saw them - was one of his best 'late period' bands, with George Adams-tenor sax, Jack Walrath-trumpet, Don Pullen-piano, Dannie Richmond-drums and the man himself on bass. This has about an hour of material by the quintet (Devil Blues, Free Cell Block F, 'Tis Nazi USA and a pertty superb 35' minute Sue's Changes) + an additional 20' or so of the band with Gerry Mulligan and Benny Bailey doing Goodbye Pork Pie Hat and Take The A Train which are nice, but loose and not up to the quintet's standards. See Charles smoke a BIG cigar during Jack's solo in Sue's Changes! Watch George's eyes roll back in his head during his solos (I remember this from seeing him at 17, but it's really...uh...up close and PERSONAL on this DVD)! See Dannie sporting a pretty cool 'fro and dressing mighty snazzy in a 1975 kinda way! Watch one of the greatest composers of the 20th century a little bit past his prime, but still in good health and totally capable of fantastic work (and still able to REALLY PLAY that bass). Oh, yeah!
