Two pretty hot performances from two stages of Muddy’s career. The previously unreleased Boston show is good quality if a bit ‘oversaturated, sounding like a radio broadcast or soundboard, while the Newport show was his first live album and has him with truly a classic lineup of his band.

“Muddy Waters shows all new comers how to play the blues live in Boston back in 1976. Smoking hot renditions of all his best songs: Caledonia, Hoochie Coochie Man, Mannish Boy.
Muddy's back up band is excellent and features Pinetop Perkins (piano), 'Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin (guitar), Calvin 'Fuzz' Jones (bass), Luther 'Guitar Jr' Johnson (guitar), Jerry Portnoy (harmonica) and Willie 'Big Eyes' Smith (drums).
Live and cooking with gas for Muddy Water's Day in Boston. Get the blues and keep them!”

“This is thirty-five minutes of pure blues history! Recorded live on July the 3rd 1960 at the Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island. It could be said Muddy Waters was at the pinnacle of his performing career on this record, and the company he was in is regarded as a classic combination of musicians, being one of Waters' first electric blues bands.
Next to Muddy's smooth and unique vocals we have the second lead instrument with James Cotton's blues harp, showing great proficiency and accompaniment while filling the monstrously talented shoes of the previous main harp player of the band: Little Walter. The great Otis Spann is also in top form. His precise and always exciting piano style was an integral part of the Muddy Waters Chicago blues sound. Spann was a great singer too, which can be heard on 'Goodbye Newport Blues' (last track).
Although 'Got My Mojo Working' Parts 1 & 2 are close to being the best versions Muddy recorded, the lesser known Willie Dixon penned 'Tiger In Your Tank' stands out as an upbeat and energetic tune, really conveying that this band can play slow and moody ('Soon Forgotten') or they can rock, roll and boogie too.”-Ethan Burke
