Navarro, Fats - The Small Group Sessions 3 x CDs (Mega Blowout Sale)

SKU 15-Brilliant 8225
One of the greatest trumpeters of all of jazz, Fats basically had a 3 year career before dying of drug-hastened tuberculosis in 1950.
This has ALL of his greatest stuff and is the only thing you need by this stupendous jazz giant, unless you are a completist.

Theodore "Fats" Navarro was one of bebop's forgotten heroes, who succumbed at age 26 (in 1950) to heroin addiction and tuberculosis. In his short life, however, he established himself as one of the pioneers of bebop and a magnificent trumpet player.
Stuart Varden, a noted Navarro authority, would have you believe that Fats was at his best in small groups (with which I totally agree), where he could fully develop and express his ideas.
This 3 CD set collects a very good selection of his small group studio work. Organized in chronological order, it is a partial history of the early days of bebop and an excellent overview of one of bebop's most important creators and players. Among the other players on this set are: Kenny Clarke, Bud Powell, Sonny Stitt, Tadd Dameron, Curly Russell, Coleman Hawkins, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Allen Eager, Howard McGhee, Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins - get the picture! There are no credits given for transfers and mastering but a very good job was done. The brief but well-written (in English) booklet gives a nice short overview of Fats' place in jazz, as well as thorough and accurate discographical information.
An excellent collection of some of his best work. Highly recommended.”
