Astor Piazzolla was a Argentinian bandoneon (button accordion) player and composer who took the tango - the music of his homeland - and pretty much single-handedly turned it into art music. This features his fabulous New Tango Quintet [Astor Piazzolla-bandoneon, Fernando Suarez Paz-violin, Pablo Ziegler-piano, Oscar Lopez Ruis-guitar, Hector Console-double bass] and this show is from the same period when I first heard/saw them and they blew my mind upon hearing them in the mid 1980s. The sound isn't really like anything else, but imagine a jazzier varient on Univers Zero without drums playing 'art-tango', and that will at least give you an idea of what this sounds like. I saw them play at the National Press Club around this time and they were beyond magnificent! It's so nice to be able to relive that incredible concert this way. And, man were they a serious bunch; not a smile on Astor's face, no matter how much applause they received. Highly and hugely recommended.
"The performance was recorded at the 1984 Montreal Jazz Festival and was meticulously digitally restored and re-mastered in September 2007 under the supervision of Astor Piazzolla’s friend and pupil Richard Galliano. This is the first live concert DVD ever filmed and released of Astor Piazzolla."
