Puente, Tito - The Mambo King (special)

SKU 10-PRISM1427
Back in stock! Some of you actually BOUGHT this wonderful album. We sold out. Now it is back and we'll see if there are yet more old fogeys out there!

As people who read the drivel I write here have probably figured out, when not pummeling myself with 'musique actuelle', I am an old fogey at heart (see my previous attempts to introduce the Wayside audience to the joys of bebop, old-timey and granny music). There's a local Pacifica station in DC and they have 6 hours of classic salsa, mambo and Latin music/Latin jazz every Sunday night which I stumbled across by accident and which I listen to pretty religiously now. Lots of great, great stuff which opened my ears further and which led me to buy a bunch of CDs to try and give myself a small collection of 'the good stuff'. This CD is one of the best that I've found; it's almost all 78s from 1949-1951 in extremely good sound and thereby predates the Mambo craze of the mid-50s, but is the music that helped to create that craze. If you feel like spending $5.00 on a record that I think is totally great and fun and a peek into a different world than I knew existed until recently, then roll the dice and take a chance, suckah!
