Quiet Sun was the 1970 band of Phil Manzanera-guitar, Bill MacCormick-bass, Dave Jarrett-keyboards & Charles Hayward-drums & vocals. They played around & recorded demos, but the band died when Phil went to Roxy Music & Bill went to Matching Mole. Phil briefly reformed the band in 1975 to record some of their old material & the result is this scorcher with Jarrett's Canterbury-style Rhodes piano spurring on Phil's fuzzed-out leads & the monster rhythm section! This is beautifully packaged, includes cool photos and tons of other documentation from Phil's archives (including all his 'no thank you letters" from various record labels! Additionally, there is nearly a full album's worth (30') of demos and outtakes (including part 1 of RFD, which got left off the original album!!), as well as a brief audio documentary/history. A highly recommended classic made even more beautiful in this set.
"Quiet Sun was a four piece conceived in 1970 at Phil Manzanera's alma mater, Dulwich College; his fellow band members were Bill MacCormick, bass, Charles Hayward, drums, vocals and Dave Jarrett, keyboards. After a brief tour and no record deal in prospect, the band split and Manzanera joined Roxy Music. By 1974, riding high on the Roxy wave, Manzanera secured a deal for his debut album Diamond Head. What he didn't mention was that he had reformed Quiet Sun and was splitting his daily 12-hour studio time between the two projects. This reissue of 'Mainstream' is in book form with new photos and memorabilia as well as bringing together all early demos in one place."
