Random Hold - The View from Here 2 x CDs (Mega Blowout Sale)

SKU 23-VP 239
Random Hold were a late 70's/early 80's band featuring Bill MacCormick-bass/vocals (from Quiet Sun/801/Matching Mole), David Rhodes-guitar/vocals (who later joined Peter Gabriel's band!), David Ferguson-keyboards/vocals & Pete Phipps-drums.
This reissues all of their quite good art-rock / new wave, Peter Hammill-produced double album Avalanche (which was broken up into an EP & lp when first released, but this is all of the material that you remember buying 40 odd years ago) plus never before heard live material from their 1980 US tour opening up for Peter Gabriel.

“At long last Random Hold's recorded legacy gets upgraded to CD. "The View from Here" includes the complete set of 17 songs produced by Peter Hammill in August 1979. As a bonus we get also over 30 minutes of quality live material from the band's US tour supporting Peter Gabriel (plus a hilarious band introduction by Gabriel).
Random Hold is hard to pigeon-hole. Their music is energetic and angular enough to be categorized as new wave, while at the same time it has got a lot in common with art rock aesthetics. Depending on the viewpoint, Random Hold can be seen either bridging successfully the gap between pre- and post-punk musical climates or falling miserably between two stools.
I personally think that Random Hold was one of the most promising new British groups to emerge in the late 70's. Their sole album (released here as it should have been released in the first place) justifies that claim with strong songwriting and imaginative musicianship. At the time of its initial release the album didn't do very well and a lot of the blame for this was put on the producer Peter Hammill - unjustifiably, it must be added. I think that Hammill has done a great job here - the versions of songs here are far better than the band's self produced demos from this era (now finally available on "Over View", the companion release to this CD): the band sounds tight and punchy, and their brooding atmospheric gloom comes across really convincingly.
Undoubtedly one of the best re-releases to come out this year. Anyone even remotely interested in creative rock music should get this.”
