Steamhammer - Mountains (24-bit remaster)

SKU 23-Eclec 2549
24-bit remaster from the original B&C Record master tapes and including a booklet with an interview with guitarist Martin Pugh.
Steamhammer were an undeservedly obscure UK power trio who started as a blues band, but by the time of this 1970 release, their third of four releases, they were beginning to move beyond their electric blues roots into something that still reflects that but is free-er and more expansive. That would continue when their fourth release finally came, but this is still a good one for folks who appreciate 1970 era progressive hard rock.

"A very strong and consistent album. This recording has solid hard blues rock with a lot of prog influences. The guitar work is other worldly and this should have been a monster release. It wasn't but the few who know about this platter can enjoy it and the best way to do that is stoned with headphones. Solid songwriting throughout and very well produced. The music is I think close to the guitar-playing style of Peter Green's last recordings with Fleetwood Mac. Reminds me also of John Mayall's "Blues from Laurel Canyon" but much darker, and somewhat close to what The Groundhogs were doing around the same time but more fluid. It has a heavy, druggy vibe and dwells in the lower frequencies. A beautiful album - highly recommended!"

I haven't heard this edition of "Mountains" , but I feel this is better than their last album that has recently gotten all the applause. Here there are still vocals in the mix and even though it is blues based.....the band have hit a great stride! Really a lost classic! Psych/prog blues with that is tasteful...and was pushing the boundaries too.
