Toker, Bayram Bilge - Bayram CD (Mega Blowout Sale)

β€œAn album of various Turkish traditional musics on the saz from one of its greatest proponents, Bayram Bilge Toker. The works were actually recorded while Toker was visiting the University of Maryland, but the authenticity holds quite well. The album starts with a love song from Sivas, and goes into one from Kayseri seamlessly. The axis of the next track allows Toker to run freely through the modes on an improvisational course, leading into a Cfolk dance from Ankara. Dropping rhythmic constraints, he moves into a long song form, accompanying his own vocals only minimally on his instrument. After a short folksong, Toker takes on the classic "Haydar Haydar," a piece reserved almost exclusively for the virtuosos. Regional works from Yozgat and Ege follow, continuing the line of diverse works. After an Ankaran dance number, and a small duet of Sufi works, the album finishes on a fully instrumental dance song from Ankara that shows off some outstanding strumming techniques. While the tone can become rather monotonous from time to time, Toker's virtuosity propels the album forward through the tired parts.
For someone who wants to hear the instrumental traditions of Turkey beyond the oud, this album is a decent point of reference for one of the more important instruments that doesn't get a lot of coverage in the usual releases.”-AllMusic
