Umphrey's McGee - Mantis 2 x CDs (special)

SKU 23-FW 5013
UPDATE: If you read the forums, this is the band that single-handedly killed Nearfest. I prefer to not think quite so little of the average music fan, but spending enough time on the forums may change my opinon - anyway, this is a great one and if you want to hear something that is hugely controversial but really shouldn't be hugely controversial, then this great set for $11.00 belongs in your home

This is the latest release by a band who has long been involved in the jam band scene, but who are crossing over into the progressive rock world in a major way with this release and with their planned and now cancelled headlining appearance at NEARFest 2011. This is very, very progressive-rock sounding in a pleasing, contemporary way. You can hear elements of some of the best of the modern progressive bands such as Echolyn both instrumentally and vocally (yes, they can 'jam' and also sing!) and bits of jazz and rock float by in a pleasing, unbelievably well played way. Once again, there are plenty of things you can do with 'progressive rock' to keep it fresh, as long as you are not only concerned about sounding like 35 year old music...and U.M. do NOT sound old. If you want to spend relatively little bread and a lot of music and also see why it makes total sense for them to be playing NF, this is a great place to start. Additionally, this is the hard to find UK version which includes a second disc containing seven live tracks not found elsewhere.
