This is by Vander's Alien Trio, which was a regular working group in the 1980s. Consisting of Michel Gaillier (formerly of Magma, and then a well-known jazz pianist in France) on piano, Alby Cullaz on double bass and Vander on drums, the group appeared at jazz festivals frequently, but for some reason they never left a document of themselves. Both Gaillier and Cullaz have since died and a decision was made to somehow document the group on record. This is live recordings of bootleg quality - well fixed up, but still quite bootleggy - of the group at Antibes PLUS a bonus of five studio sessions for an aborted studio recording that never was completed. The studio tracks are extremely good quality and I can't imagine why this session was never completed, as it sounds great, both musically and sonically. But it never was. "A rare witness to the memory of an exceptional trio, this album will combine a live performance recorded from the core of the crowd in Antibes, in 1983 with long extracts from fully unreleased studio sessions. In February 1988 the trio entered the studio to work on an album, but the project never got off the ground. Following the death of Alby Cullaz in 1998, and Michel Graillier in 2003, we thought these recordings would never see the light of day. Time, however, has passed by and the moment has come to share both the moving intimacy of the studio sessions and the incredible energy of this unique concert; not only this, to honour the memory of these great musicians, such dear friends of ours who passed away before their time."
