"The Umsonst & Draussen festival has been an ongoing free festival in Vlotho, Germany since the mid-70s. Its still quite active. There were 4 very rare double album live compilations from each festival starting in 1975. This 4CD box set collects all of the music from the 4 albums and comes with an extensive booklet (written in German) with lots of pictures of naked people covered in mud. The festival was tied in with Schneeball Records and featured a number of their bands. I can't tell you that I've heard of half of the bands covered on this compilation but here is who I know and will be of interest to you: Embryo, Missus Beastly, Munju, Aera, Real Ax Band, Sparifankal, Es, Checkpoint Charlie, and Moira. Without a translation I'm feeling around in the dark a bit but it seems that the festival was started by Hans-Joachim Patz who has a band called Hammerfest. He must have been one of the founders since Hammerfest is all over this set! Luckily this band slays! I'm talkin' killer guitar freak out jams. Don't know if Hammerfest ever released any albums but they should have! Ever hear of Jack Bone Group? Atzen Wehmeyer or Buttergasse? What about Einhorn or Skyline? Me either but I can't wait to dig in and find out...This box set is a pure labor of love."-Ken Golden
