"Like a number of other psychedelic records from the '70s, the level of sophistication on the Zerfas album in the playing, arrangements, and production quality is quite remarkable for some band from Middle America recording an album on their own. If there had been some sort of continued psychedelic movement and a market for music like this, Zerfas would have been viable as a major label act."-Blastitude #20
"The sole 1973 album on 700 West by the Indianapolis outfit featuring the Zerfas brothers David and Herman, is one of the best and probably best-known self-pressed U.S. psych records ever to have seen the light of day. All the material is self-penned, which comes as a surprise, as the tracks are all uniformly strong, with lots of keyboards, ring modulators, heavy reverb, backwards vocals, random sound effects, and some outstanding harmonies. One pundit was moved to write: "...a stunning psych album [which] can only be described as what might have happened if The Beatles had pushed the psychedelic experiments of Revolver into late-'60s/early-'70s territory," which gives you some idea of what this album's all about. As a fan wrote after discovering the band for the first time, "...as the prelude to the first track slowly faded up -- a wondrously thick mix of layered backwards and forwards voices and sounds -- I remember thinking that this might just be the best thing I'd ever heard. Across the two sides you can get some sense of these musicians laboring for hours in a small studio to get just the right blend of harmony, guitar, drums and organ to reach for that fleeting glimpse of something larger than we are. This is a great LP." And really, there's not much more you can add to that, is there?"
