Classic 1969 Actuel release now on CD and one of the few featuring Braxton following the AACM-style use of a large amount of ‘little instruments’.
“Here Braxton masterfully articulates all of the compositional concepts he was working with at the time in a digestible, succinct manner, through the language of improvisation.
I have so much more to say about this - firstly that this is not just a Braxton record and Smith and Jenkins both contribute compositions equally as masterful at expressing this sonic union - and it’s becoming clear that the band of Braxton / Jenkins / Smith is just one of those once in a lifetime unions. This is truly unique music and I like it very much. Smith’s piece foreshadows his remarkable compositional career.
The addition of Steve Mccall, one of the most important drummers in history and probably the most proportionally underrated drummer in Jazz, is extremely significant and should be noted. And ironically, its significant lies in part due to the fact that he exists in some sort of gaseous, diffused state within the legendary trio. These compositions serve as the perfect vehicle for these creatives to bring together singular components and thus make four-times singular music. Braxton’s piece is of course a standout.”-rateyourmusic
