This 2004 release, recorded live in San Francisco at Yoshi's on May 13-14, 2003, is, by my count, the 8th release by his Earthworks jazz group. I haven't followed Earthwork's career probably as much as I should (I like Bill's work a lot and I like jazz) because I was originally a bit turned off by his initial usage of electronic drums in a jazz context when Earthworks first started. That's not been the case for many years however, and listening to this, I see I've been missing quite a lot. The music is definitely jazz and it definitely swings, but it is more dependent on 'tricky bits' (ala the best progressive rock) than a lot of jazz. As I was playing this, I forgot what I was playing and a couple of times I thought I was listening to a Hermeto Pascoal record, who is 'tricky' in the same, attractive way. An excellent release.
