“There are many things that qualify as free jazz, but only a few are what I’d call ABSOLUTE. To me, this means the music leaves little to no breathing room; it’s an unrelenting assault on the senses for however long it lasts. Cecil Taylor’s Akisakila sets the gold standard here, an astonishing piece that doesn’t let up for more than 80 minutes. Similarly, Peter Brötzmann’s Machine Gun took direct inspiration from its namesake, aiming to overwhelm listeners with sheer sonic force. Another example would be Alan Silva’s Luna Surface, an album where cacophony is both the medium and the message, a relentless tide of simultaneous solos from every musician involved.
Echo belongs in this same category. The concept here was simple: gather a group of free jazz masters in the studio, set them loose, and let them play until there was simply nowhere else to go. The title track, a sprawling 20-minute maelstrom, embodies this ethos perfectly. It’s no wonder Thurston Moore put it at the top of his legendary list of the “Top Ten from the Free Jazz Underground.””-rateyourmusic
