“Chicago bassist and composer Christopher Dammann’s Dead Words is a collection of spiritual contrafacts tracing a line from bebop through free jazz into the present. The album balances deep swing, open improvisation, and compositional rigor in a bold personal statement rooted in Chicago’s creative music tradition.
To realize this music, Dammann assembled an extraordinary ensemble of Chicago improvisers whose individual voices have helped define multiple generations of the city’s creative music scene.
“These are musicians I’ve listened to for at least 20 years,” says Dammann. “It’s hard to untangle both how that influenced my taste and what I thought being a competent jazz musician means. They each have their own voices, swing, and are deeply rooted in the history of this music while pushing it forward.’”
