“This 1968 club jam (with a fairly consistent release and track order history) has gotten so much flak, it’s hard to address all the points: Be it bootleg sound quality, sloppy jam playing, boring neverending blues noodling, the fact that perfectionist Hendrix would never have approved of releasing this, or, worst offender as such was his job: a beyond belief-drunk Jim Morrison shouting a monotonous avalanche of obscenities to a blues tune. I can’t remember how often I read „be sure to skip this bootleg session.“
But after I had gotten into the blues (and then Hendrix) as a teenager, this was exactly what I was looking for: ten minute-songs of awesome, incessantly inventive psych-blues solos in factually very, very decent sound quality, everybody playing more interested in the feel rather than in virtuosity, Hendrix trying many different songs of his (and my) idols, puts a different up-tempo spin on his classic „Red House“ – and then Morrison steps up, screams a lot about fucking, unable to even find the recording microphone by himself (you can hear Jimi helping him out) – but blimey if this version of Hendrix’ live favourite „Bleeding Heart“ isn’t one of the greatest raw blues solos ever put on tape. Hendrix just bends and squeezes every ounce of feeling out of that guitar, Morrison stops singing „lyrics“ after a while and simply resorts to unearthly delta blues-field moans. It’s unbelievably excessive, and that, ladies and gentlemen, is the blues... it also has one of Hendrix’ greatest solos bar none that's rarely ever talked about: that bit between 2:59 to 3:59 at the climax of „Tomorrow Never Knows“ has Hendrix going all out, completely unconcerned with studio restrictions or live audience concerns. If you’re into Hendrix at his most excessive, this is where you find it.
