Christopher Hoffman - cello

“Christopher Hoffman attempts to obliterate misconceptions about the capacity of the violoncello.” — PostGenre

This is the debut solo album by cellist Christopher Hoffman, and is a tribute to one of America’s great bird artists, Rex Brasher (1869–1960). In Hoffman’s words “REX is a solo cello record written and recorded while living in the former home of Rex Brasher, a self-taught painter who created over 1,200 watercolors of North American birds. Composed for acoustic and electric cello, the record reflects the solitude and intensity that shaped both Brasher’s vision and my own process. REX is not a portrait, but an echo—of a person, a place, and a way of seeing the world. Each piece was written with loops and layers, but to be performed live–allowing the music to shift, grow, and take on a new form each time. The record is a conversation with Brasher’s world, where, place, and memory continue to shape one another.”
After many years living in Brooklyn, in 2023 Christopher Hoffman and his family decided it was time for a change. In their search for places to live north of the city they were shown a 116-acre property by Matthew Schnepf, a board member of the Rex Brasher association who shared some of the history of the place, and of Rex himself. Hoffman, intrigued, continued to research, leading to him purchasing a two volume set of Birds and Trees of North America. Concurrently, and at the encouragement of Henry Threadgrill, Hoffman debuted his first solo project for Tomeka Reid’s Chicago Jazz String Summit. This planted the seed for the 13 track album REX, which was conceived on the property, and was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Hoffman in Brasher’s home.”
