Jackson, Willis - Call Of The Gators CD (Mega Blowout Sale)

SKU DE 460
“This has some of the earliest work as a leader from the great Willis Jackson – a tenorist who first began as a key crossover figure between postwar jazz and R&B! The music here definitely captures Jackson in that mode – great small combo sets recorded for the Apollo label up in Harlem – presented here with cuts that were originally issued as 78rpm singles, plus other unissued titles too – all making for a great overview of these early years!
It was early 1949 before Cootie Williams was able to get his new discovery into a recording studio. A two part 78, Gator Tail, which featured almost no work from the leader but hellfire wailing from his then unknown sideman was virtually unprecedented. For many years collectors went searching for the selection that gave Willis Jackson his nickname. The music heard on this disc represents the earliest of his work under his own name.”
