“In 1992, Paul McCandless released Premonition. The album featured Lyle Mays on piano, Fred Simon on keyboards, and Mark Walker on drums. That same outstanding crew performed nine concerts that summer, beginning with an appearance on July 4 at the Montreal Jazz Festival and concluding with a three-night engagement from August 21 to 23 at Kimball's East in the San Francisco Bay Area. A DAT tape of their Kimball's East performance sat in McCandless's home archives for decades before being discovered recently. Co-producer Jon Krosnick, whose San Francisco-based band, Charged Particles, toured extensively with McCandless from 2015 to 2019, said: "One day, I was at Paul's house, sorting through material to build his website. He climbed a ladder up to a little storage area in the garage. That's where he found a tape that wasn't well-marked. I brought it home, played it, and immediately thought, 'We've got to release this.'
"The release of this live set from 1992 is a poignant reminder of the profound sense of loss we all felt from Lyle Mays's passing in 2020." Mays, the longtime writing partner of Pat Metheny and charter member of the Pat Metheny Group from 1978 to 2005, was also a kindred spirit to McCandless. The magical connection apparent on Premonition becomes even more pronounced on these live tracks from Kimball's East.”
