For my money, one of the the top 3 Mingus albums and one of the top 10 60s jazz albums of all time. This is the classic album that has Charles announcing at the beginning, “Good evening ladies and gentlemen, we’d like to remind you that we don’t applaud here at the Showplace, so please restrain your applause . . . the reason is that we are interrupted by your noise”, and then the band blasts off!
Charles famously was dismissive of free-jazz, and this isn’t free jazz, technically, I suppose, since Charles was such an inspiring writer, but it’s openness of sound and the great solos sure bring it pretty damn close. It’s certainly the sound of freedom within jazz!
They’re going to bury me clutching this one in my hand. Recommended!
“The amount of free playing and writing, and blues-influenced stuff here is impeccable, and these things are some of the essential characteristics of jazz in its origins. Every musician here is sick as always, soloing like a God and technically outstanding. Jazz Masterpiece.” - rym
