“Five musicians walked into De Lane Lea Studios in July 1970. The album came out on Bell Records in America. Nobody in the band was told.
Orang-Utan began as Hunter, a hard-rock outfit shepherded into one of London’s great studios by manager, impresario and future Babys architect Adrian Millar. With engineer Louis Austin at the desk, the band cut eight tracks in a single session—raw, muscular rock with little interest in tidying the edges.
The album surfaced in America in 1971 without the band’s knowledge or compensation. It became a collector’s grail, then a magnet for bootlegs and reissues, while the musicians who made it watched their own record acquire a life they had never agreed to.
Years after Millar’s death, his original 8-track session tape was recovered from a loft. The source everyone had been circling for decades had been sitting there all along.
