"John Boegehold, main man from P-SA: The word ‘Grimalkin’ originated in 16th-century English as a variation of ‘graymalkin’ (gray cat) and was later popularized by Shakespeare's Macbeth as the name of one of the witches' familiars, a cat companion with magical and supernatural associations.
‘It's great to finally have a release for Grimalkin, our sixth album since 2019. We're all very happy with the way it turned out. Along the way we tried a few new musical directions and sounds, some different instrumentation, etc.’
Given the band's close ties to Spock’s Beard, it was important to John that Pattern-Seeking Animals break new ground—whether in terms of song structures, vocal arrangements, synthesizer sounds, or emotional textures. "Pattern-Seeking Animals was a blank slate," says Boegehold. "That’s why I drew inspiration from various musical influences and employed modern production ideas and sound concepts that, for various reasons, I likely wouldn't have used with Spock’s Beard."
