“The sound of the fifth Benoit Pioulard full-length is lush and verdant, a temperate rainforest of ear ecstasy that reflects the environment surrounding the artist. A mostly instrumental work, it is an adept melding of song and sound, melody and texture, the intangible and the palpable, that in an abstract sense recalls the more fractured and loose end of the '70s krautrock movement.”
“Transmission received! Like gauze spun from a dream, catching sundogs as it floats downward onto the listener... Pioulard has focused on looped guitar drones and granular analog sounds on Sonnet rather than songs, its snips of melody are at times buried in the static.
Sonnet is a series of atmospheres. Any definite content it may have is contained within the song titles, 14 contiguous lines on the back cover. The rest is golden indefinite.
Lest that sound too hazy or gossamer, let me assure you the opposite is true. Sonnet is transportive instrumental drone music with touches of harmony and cameos by Pioulard's voice but no real "vocals" per se; a surprisingly grounded piece of electro-acoustic ambience. At times dark and liquid, at times luminous, formless but with hints of an underlying lattice, Sonnet recalls the interstitial instrumental pieces of Pioulard's previous, excellent song-driven efforts like Temper or Precís. Here, they are magnified into an album-length suite without edges. In a two year period that has seen several high-water marks from this artist (i.e. the excellent Orcas sophomore release, the underrated Hymnal Remixes double album), Sonnet provides another example of the beguilingly simple organic sounds that Pioulard conjures and manipulates so well.”
