“Pop Workshop was a Sweden-based Jazz-Rock project,led by two Polish emigrants and important figures of Polish Jazz music, pianist/keyboardist Wlodek Gulgowski and sax player Zbigniew Namysłowski.Found in 1973, the project featured some great musicians like Swedish guitarist Janne Schaffer, Schaffer's fellows drummer and bassist Ola Brunkert (also on Baltik and Ablution) and Stefan Brolund (later bassist of Egba) along with percussionists Ed Thigpen and Ahmadu Jarr (also of Egba fame).Including compositions written by Gulgowski and Namyslowski, Pop Workshop released ''Vol.1'' in 1973 on Grammofonverket.
The style is rather typical Jazz-Rock crossed often with free Jazz and Funk vibes, especially on the first side of the original LP, led by the sax of Namyslowski, while Gulgowski's performance on synths and piano remains sometimes in the background.The individual performances of course are of first class with dominant electric piano and sax solos and some space for Schaffer to show off his incredible skills on guitar playing. On the other hand the team performance is typical of a Jazz-Rock band, competing with straight grooves, fiery interplays and improvised one-dimensional performances, with no special surprises.Percussions are added distreectly here and there, without ever being on the forefront.The second side is pretty similar to the first one with the exception of ''Equivalent in nature'', where flutes are added and produce some really cool soundscapes in the vein of PORK PIE.
This is fine and quite tight Jazz-Rock with series of professional deliveries but without adding this extra dimension one would expect.Even so, ''Vol.1'' is warmly recommended to all fans of energetic Jazz-Rock and Jazz-Fusion,it couldn't be different with such an all-star line-up.” - Rate Your Music
