“Guts Voyage is a most impressive debut; few bands get it this right straight out of the gate, but Shmulikraut has done it.” - Peter Thelen, Exposé
With their first release, this Israeli band has produced an excellent album of avant-progressive that touches on chamber rock, folk motifs, tango, and much more that really doesn’t sound like anyone else working in this arena.
“Shmulikraut is an Israeli band formed five years ago in the small town of Mitzpe Ramon, right on the edge of the Ramon Crater in the Israeli high desert. The members of the band were then students at the Mitzpe Ramon jazz school and decided to form a band at a concert of their keyboardist -and music genius- Gal Costa. Nowadays the members of Shmulikraut are full time musicians, teachers and sound engineers.
The band took its name after a joke about the old-school Israeli singer Shmulik Kraus; an amazing artist with a great '70s vibe and a key figure in Israeli rock. The name is an obvious combination of his name and "krautrock”. Of course, there’s more than Krautrock.
The album was engineered by Udi Koomran, known for his work with Présent, Gong, The Orvalians, Ábrete Gandul, Asceta and many other first-class acts.
Expect a strange mix of folk, jazz, avant progressive and electronica, in the vein of Faust, Zappa, Magma, Aksak Maboul, Terry Riley, Soft Machine and Auterche.”
