Smoke were a very early electric jazz band from California, who recorded two unknown albums for MPS in 1970 and 1971. Their first has never been reissued and I’ve never heard it, but this one, their second and last, is the 1971 session, but it was not released until 1973 and this is its first-ever CD release! It was recorded at Wally Heider studios, so this is no low - budget sounding album, either!
This is an original artifact of the great first few years of electric jazz when there were no rules except what the musicians were doing and THIS HAS THAT SOUND! There are two vocalists but only a very small amount of atmospheric vocals and when you look up Kozmigroov in the dictionary, there’s a picture of this album!
Spacey, spacious, sometimes very mellow and atmospheric and sometimes a little bit funky with moving bass grooves and the bass clarinet really singing! You want and need this!
