“This 1960 octet recording gives the impression of a transitional album, demonstrating an appreciation for what came before in the bop and cool styles while opening the door for small group jazz the way it would sound for the next 15 or 20 years.
Phil composed and arranged the entire album, providing an early demonstration of his writing talents. His solo work is crisp and exciting as always, and the others in the ensemble get plenty of room to stretch as well - even the French horn. All the tracks are fine work that bears repeated listening, but if I had to pick a favorite it would be "Part V (Presto)."
