“Tatsuya Yoshida needs little introduction to devotees of Japan's experimental underground. As the founding drummer and creative engine behind Ruins — and through a relentless stream of duo and solo projects — Yoshida has spent decades forging a singular language at the intersection of progressive rock, free improvisation, and hardcore intensity.
His partnership with pianist Risa Takeda represents one of his most searching and harmonically rich collaborations: a meeting of percussive ferocity and classical rigour that consistently defies easy categorisation.
Absurd Chair arrives as the duo's 2026 statement, compiling a carefully curated selection of performances recorded at venues across Japan — from Mandala Kichijoji and Tokuzo Nagoya to Mujica Japonica Osaka — between September 2025 and March 2026. Crucially, the album also includes the pair's first studio recording proper: a multi-track capture of a live rehearsal session at Studio UEN Nishiogikubo, in which Takeda explores the grand piano through multi-effects processing, opening up new textural dimensions within the duo's established vocabulary.
The result is a panoramic document of a working improvisation partnership at the height of its powers, running to over 73 minutes across 14 tracks.”
