Brotzmann, Peter/Steve Noble - I Am Here Where Are You

SKU 05-TROST 122CD
"After the great 2012 record by Brötzmann/Noble/Edwards, The Worse the Better, Peter Brötzmann and Steve Noble started to play some gigs as a duo. It worked out really well -- wonderful pieces of music that had to be put on CD; an expert, you might even say telepathic, interplay between those two outstanding musicians -- sometimes delicate and swinging, sometimes full-force free jazz. Recorded live at Ateliers Claus, Brussels on January 19, 2013. Peter Brötzmann (reeds); Steve Noble (drums)."

" This recording showcases the unprecedented and unparalleled reed magic for the foremost avant-guard player in world today: Peter Brotzmann. At age 72, this pioneer of free jazz in Europe (he hails from Germany) relentlessly creates some of the most courageous music available. Many of his recordings are solo outings as well as duets with only drummers. This means that Mr. Brotzmann must carry all the melody, harmony, and soloing on his shoulders. He is supported only by percussion, the rhythm. One might take this as impossible, especially given the uncharted zones in which free jazz explores. While I have heard dozens of solo and duet recordings by Mr. Brotzmann, none of them is repetitive, cloying, annoying, or--of course--pedestrian.

Mr. Brotzman plays tenor sax, alto sax, and the taragoto (a reed instrument rarely played in jazz). This drummer is in sync with this wild but often deeply lyrical music. Mr. Brotzmann's tone is unique--a bit raspy at times, without being hoarse, but also profoundly soft and tender at times. He can also sour into the higher realms of long, clear notes. He can screech, wail, honk, and blow with the best; and no one sounds anything like him, although some, such as Ivo Perelman, explore some of the same territory.

As someone who has a nearly complete collection of Mr. Brotzmann's recordings, I find this recording to be fully satisfying. Aficionados of avant-guarde jazz and those willing to explore the liminal limits of jazz will be amply rewarded by this stellar effort."-Douglas Groothius
