This disc, the fourth in a series of recordings from the visionary geography of Anaphoria Island, is the premiere recording of a new acoustic orchestra of instruments created and hand-built by Kraig Grady. All of the instruments are tuned to a unique micro-tonal tuning called Meta Slendro, and represent a type of tuning never before implemented with either real or virtual instruments. The resulting sound is a lush landscape of subtly shifting, beating patterns that can only be compared to Indonesian gamelan. Three different compositions quietly enter one at a time to form layers of melodictextures over the pounding rhythmic patterns played upon Mount Meru, an immense instrument consisting of tuned bass gongs which requires up to four players. The result is hypnotic and not at all meek. Kraig Grady has composed and performed exclusively on acoustic instruments in just intonation since 1975, taking a lead by the work of Harry Partch. Though he has performed prominently and extensively in the Southern California area, due to the size and nature of his instruments and productions, Kraig has rarely had the opportunity to tour with his work. So, this recording gives those who have not had a chance to see him the opportunity to hear his unique music. [AOA]
