There are a lot of younger guitarists mining the 'American primitive guitar' esthetic right now, some of them adding very modern things to it and some of them playing it rather straight. Of all these (very fine) players, I have yet to hear one who nails the vibe of the best period (60's-mid 70's) originator of the field, John Fahey, like Jack Rose. Jack is a member of the more experimental band Pelt, but on his own, he creates a wonderful orchestra of concert works for acoustic, steel-string guitar. If you love that sound, you will love this.

Kensington Blues is the fourth full-length release from Jack Rose and his most diverse outing by far. The album is an inspired mix of styles and sounds, with straight ragtime, heavy 12-string, and that sweet, sweet Weissenborn lap guitar all checking in. Honed during endless touring in 2004, the repertoire here is delivered with maximum authority in a series of first-take performances recorded in early 2005.

"While the new century's novel folk has already seen significant definition, Rose is largely alone in talking new century ideas with the old language.... Kensington Blues is derivative and at the same time nearly brilliant. 8.0."
